A scientific expedition ventures into a radiation-laden island in Ishiro Honda\u2019s 1961\u00a0tokusatsu<\/i>\u00a0classic, Mothra featuring Toho\u2019s most popular\u00a0kaiju<\/i>\u00a0monster after Godzilla. Screens July 8, 2022 in 35mm with introduction by Japan<\/span>ese sci-fi critic Kevin Derendorf. <\/i><\/p>\n

To commemorate 25 years since its 1997 release,\u00a0Hayao Miyazaki<\/b>\u2019s mystical epic\u00a0Princess Mononoke\u00a0<\/i><\/b>screens in 35mm on July 22, 2022 in the Monthly Anime series. This is the final screening in the spring\/summer 2022 in-person monthly anime showcase.<\/p>\n

Monthly Anime is\u00a0presented by\u00a0Yen Press<\/span>. Additional\u00a0support is provided by Sapporo U.S.A. The screening of\u00a0Princess Mononoke<\/i>\u00a0is supported by Kodansha USA Publishing, LLC.<\/p>\n

When a shipwrecked crew is rescued from a Pacific island previously used for nuclear testing, word quickly spreads of its newly discovered indigenous inhabitants. Driven by scientific curiosity, a joint expedition of Japan<\/span>ese and Rolisicans (a portmanteau for Russia and America) venture into the island’s depths, discovering a paradise of mutated species and hidden glyphs\u2014and, among them, a pair of tiny twin fairies (played by \u201960s pop duo The Peanuts). When the expedition\u2019s leader decides to secretly kidnap the fairies, the natives are forced to awaken their ancient deity, Mothra. He is the author of the book\u00a0Kaiju for Hipsters: 101 Alternative Giant Monster Movies, head writer on the\u00a0Maser Patrol\u00a0blog, and a frequent guest host on the\u00a0Kaiju Transmissions\u00a0podcast. He also contributed to Arrow\u2019s\u00a0Daimajin\u00a0Blu-ray box set, occasionally writes for\u00a0Grimoire of Horror, and frequently presents lectures at anime and tokusatsu conventions.<\/p>\n
