Years in the making and located in its beloved landmarked <span class=\"markl3ao1elmn\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">firehouse<\/span>building in Chinatown, \u2018<span class=\"markl3ao1elmn\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Firehouse<\/span>: DCTV\u2019s <span class=\"marknoq17uoym\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Cinema<\/span> for <span class=\"markar0i0zgln\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Documentary<\/span> Film\u2019 will feature first run films and curated programs. The theater will offer a dedicated space for <span class=\"markar0i0zgln\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">documentary<\/span>films\u2014making it one of a few of its kind in the world.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">DCTV was co-founded by Academy Award-nominee and <span class=\"markar0i0zgln\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">documentary<\/span>\u00a0Stalwart Jon Alpert (<em>Life of Crime: 1984 &#8211; 2020<\/em>) and Keiko Tsuno, who currently serve as the organization\u2019s Co-Executive Directors and who together have received 16 Emmy Awards. It took 50 years to build the DCTV <span class=\"markl3ao1elmn\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Firehouse<\/span> <span class=\"marknoq17uoym\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Cinema<\/span>, this beautiful palace for <span class=\"markar0i0zgln\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">documentary<\/span> films. We want to thank everyone who helped us get here and can\u2019t wait to show you around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;I&#8217;m thrilled by the opportunity to program for <span class=\"markl3ao1elmn\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Firehouse<\/span>, and to help build a new home for <span class=\"markar0i0zgln\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">documentary<\/span> exhibition,\u201d said Dara Messinger. \u201cMy hope is for the theater to become a go-to destination to celebrate, engage with, and reflect upon all that nonfiction film has to offer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Founded in 1972, DCTV has not only produced countless award-winning <span class=\"markar0i0zgln\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">documentary<\/span>productions, but has also been host to community screenings, discussions, youth media, and continuing education programs. The organization\u2019s early public screenings and first docs\u2014often made by residents gathering together to collectively film local issues\u2014helped bring crucial changes including ousting corrupt school boards, securing community control over their local hospital, and fighting for the rights of taxi drivers and sweatshop workers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As an extension of this ethos, DCTV envisions its <span class=\"markl3ao1elmn\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Firehouse<\/span> <span class=\"marknoq17uoym\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Cinema<\/span> as an opportunity to help shift a disempowering, commercial culture, where filmmakers and film lovers can come together in appreciation of, and with curiosity for, nonfiction film.
