Louise Fletcher, an Oscar winning actress has died at the age 88, in her home in Montdurausse, France.<\/p>\n

She was reportedly passed away peacefully at home with her family, her agent David Shaul told The Associated Press<\/a> on Friday<\/p>\n

Louise Fletcher, a late-blooming star who garnered the Oscar as the sadistic Nurse Ratched in Milos Forman\u2019s 1975 feature \u201cOne Flew Over the Cuckoo\u2019s Nest<\/strong>,\u201d creating one of the screen\u2019s most iconic villains as a bureaucratic authority figure.<\/p>\n

Fletcher\u2019s career spanned more than sixty years and she began acting with guest spots on shows like \u201cMaverick<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cThe Untouchables<\/strong>\u201d in the 1950s along with \u201cPerry Mason,<\/strong>\u201d then she landed her Emmy nominations for her work in \u201cPicket Fences<\/strong>”\u00a0and \u201cJoan of Arcadia<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But she put her career on hold to raise her children in mid 60\u2019s to early 70\u2019s, before stepping into Robert Altman\u2019s \u201cThieves Like Us<\/strong>\u201d which led to be chosen for the role opposite Jack Nicholson in the 1975 film by director Milos Forman, who had admired her work the year before in director Robert Altman’s film.\u00a0When she was offered, she didn’t have a clue that many other prominent stars, including Angela Lansbury, Anne Bancroft, Ellen Burstyn had turned down what could be the career defining role.<\/p>\n

Fletcher was hindered by her age in finding major roles in Hollywood, but she worked continuously for most of the rest of her life. Her post-“Cuckoo’s Nest” films included “Mama Dracula<\/strong>,” “Dead Kids<\/strong>” and “The Boy Who Could Fly<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

In 1993, her career was revived with her \u201cStar Tre<\/strong>k\u201d role which led to films like \u201cCruel Intentions<\/strong>\u201d and roles on shows ranging from \u201c7th Heaven<\/strong>\u201d to \u201cPrivate Practice<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cShameless<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

She is survived by sons John and Andrew Bick, granddaughter Emilee Kaya Bick, sister Roberta Ray and brother-in-law Edward Ray, and 10 nieces and nephews.<\/p>\n
