Apple Original Films revealed today the trailer for highly anticipated film \u201cEmancipation<\/strong>,\u201d directed and executive produced by Antoine Fuqua (\u201cTraining Day<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cThe Equalizer<\/strong>\u201d) and starring and produced by Will Smith (\u201cKing Richard<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cThe Pursuit of Happyness<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cAli<\/strong>\u201d). \u201cEmancipation<\/strong>\u201d tells the triumphant story of Peter (Smith), a man who escapes from slavery, relying on his wits, unwavering faith and deep love for his family to evade cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana on his quest for freedom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The film is inspired by the 1863 photos of \u201cWhipped Peter,\u201d taken during a Union Army medical examination, that first appeared in Harper\u2019s Weekly. One image, known as \u201cThe Scourged Back,\u201d which shows Peter\u2019s bare back mutilated by a whipping delivered by his enslavers, ultimately contributed to growing public opposition to slavery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Director Fuqua warned the readers of\u00a0Vanity Fair<\/a>\u00a0that the film should not be viewed in terms of Smith\u2019s outburst against Oscar presenter Chris Rock earlier this year.\u00a0\u201cThe film to me is bigger than that moment,\u201d Fuqua said. \u201cFour hundred years of slavery is bigger than one moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cMy hope is that people will see it that way and watch the movie and be swept away with the great performance by Will and all the real hard work that the whole crew did.”<\/p>\n

Fuqua director also noted that \u201cas a filmmaker, I wasn\u2019t out looking for a slave movie; I never saw \u2018Emancipation\u2019 as a slave movie.\u201d Instead, the film is rooted in \u201csacred motivation\u201d and the pursuit of freedom in both physical and spiritual senses. \u201cIt was a story about triumph,\u201d the \u201cEqualizer\u201d director continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmancipation<\/strong>\u201d is directed by Antoine Fuqua, from a script by William N. Collage. The film is produced by Will Smith and Jon Mone through Westbrook Studios, Joey McFarland though McFarland Entertainment and Todd Black through Escape Artists. Chris Brigham, Antoine Fuqua, James Lassiter, Heather Washington, Cliff Roberts, Glen Basner and Scott Greenberg are executive producing.<\/p>\n

The film will premiere in theaters on December 2, 2022, and globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, December 9, 2022.<\/p>\n
