{"id":13795,"date":"2022-12-09T11:58:50","date_gmt":"2022-12-09T16:58:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=13795"},"modified":"2022-12-09T11:58:50","modified_gmt":"2022-12-09T16:58:50","slug":"alexander-payne-set-to-direct-election-sequel-with-reese-witherspoon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=13795","title":{"rendered":"Alexander Payne Set to Direct \u2018Election\u2019 Sequel With Reese Witherspoon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reese Witherspoon is set to reprise her role as go-getter Tracy Flick in \u201c<strong>Tracy Flick Can\u2019t Win<\/strong>,\u201d a sequel to the 1999 political comedy \u201cElection.\u201d Reese Witherspoon is set to reunite with director Alexander Payne.<\/p>\n<p>The 1999 original film had a breakout success for Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay and Witherspoon<span class=\"gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>garnered a Golden Globe nod for best actress in a musical or comedy.<span class=\"gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The sequel will be an adaptation of Tom Perrotta\u2019s Tracy Flick Can\u2019t Win, which published in June this year, follows the character of Tracy Flick as she battles to become the principal of a suburban high school. \u201cShe hasn\u2019t fulfilled her dreams of a political career,\u201d Perrotta said of Tracy in the book. \u201cAnd she\u2019s looking back and starting to realize that she wasn\u2019t as extraordinary an individual as she believed. That she was a kind of representative woman rather than a unique superhero.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Witherspoon has since gone on to win an Oscar for her role in Walk the Line and launched her production company Hello Sunshine with Seth Rodsky.<span class=\"gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She has most recently appeared in Apple TV\u2019s drama series &#8220;<strong>The Morning Show<\/strong>.&#8221; She will next lead Netflix romantic comedy Your Place or Mine alongside Ashton Kutcher and Legally Blonde 3, co-written by Mindy Kaling.<\/p>\n<p>Payne\u2019s last film was 2017\u2019s high-concept satire Downsizing starring Matt Damon. The film received mixed reviews and was a commercial misfire. His next film The Holdovers stars Paul Giamatti was recently purchased by Focus Features for a worldwide release and is expected to be released in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Tracy Flick Can\u2019t Win<\/strong>&#8221; is one of many projects heading to Paramount\u2019s streaming network based on pre-existing studio property. Next year, the company will see a TV remake of &#8220;<strong>Fatal Attraction<\/strong>&#8221; starring Joshua Jackson and Lizzy Caplan and they also have a &#8220;<strong>Grease<\/strong>&#8221; prequel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Tracy Flick Can\u2019t Win<\/strong>&#8221; will be released on streaming platform Paramount+.
