The 93rd<\/sup> Academy Awards were handed out tonight, in a ceremony that featured in-person nominees in a variety of venues including Union Station in Los Angeles. There was clearly excitement around the idea of people being in the same room and getting to gather together, though some of the staging of the ceremony was awkward, including winners gathered in satellite locations, like London, who weren\u2019t given the chance to speak. There was no playing off of winners to shorten their speeches, and a surprising dearth of clips substituted instead with lengthy introductions of each category by presenters.<\/p>\n

The biggest surprise of the night may have been the order of the categories, which had Best Director, which was awarded to Chlo\u00e9 Zhao, only the second woman ever to win the prize, given out early on in the ceremony. What is typically the biggest and last category, Best Picture, was handed out before the two lead acting races, which were thought to be more competitive and ultimately went to Frances McDormand for Nomadland<\/em> and Anthony Hopkins, who was not present, for The Father<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The big winner of the night was Nomadland<\/em>, which won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress, making Frances McDormand the second woman ever to win three Best Actress trophies. Next up were a handful of films with two wins apiece: The Father<\/em>, Judas and the Black Messiah, Ma Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom, Mank, Soul<\/em>, and Sound of Metal<\/em>. The only Best Picture nominee to go home empty-handed was The Trial of the Chicago 7<\/em>.<\/p>\n
