There\u2019s a tempest brewing in the Magic Kingdom over the firing of Victoria Alonso, who has been canned as chief executive of Marvel VFX on the grounds she was working for a rival studio in producing Argentina, 1985.<\/strong> <\/em>A nominee for Best Feature at this year\u2019s Academy Awards, the film was produced in part by Amazon Studios and released on Prime Video in October.

It was the Hollywood Reporter<\/em> that first broke the news about the brouhaha, reporting Alonso\u2019s claims that she had Disney\u2019s \u201cblessing\u201d to work on the film and thus did nothing to violate her 2018 employment contract. Her attorney Patty Glaser, termed Disney\u2019s motivation as \u201cabsolutely ridiculous.\u201d Glaser is also taking LucasFilm\u2014owned by Disney\u2014to court for an unrelated matter.

After Alonso’s firing, Glaser was quoted as saying: \u201cThe idea that Victoria was fired over a handful of press interviews relating to a personal passion project about human rights and democracy that was nominated for an Oscar and which she got Disney\u2019s blessing to work on is absolutely ridiculous.\u201d

Glaser added that \u201cVictoria, a gay Latina who had the courage to criticize Disney, was silenced. Then she was terminated when she refused to do something she believed was reprehensible.

A spokesperson for Disney told Variety<\/em>: \u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate that Victoria is sharing a narrative that leaves out several key factors concerning her departure, including an indisputable breach of contract and a direct violation of company policy. We will continue to wish her the best for the future and thank her for her numerous contributions to the studio.\u201d

But it appears that Disney had more to cry about than just Argentina, 1985<\/strong><\/em>. Variety<\/em> also noted that Alonso\u2019s relationship with Marvel had become \u201cincreasingly fraught\u201d over her general oversight. Its most recent release, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, <\/strong><\/em>was roundly criticized for its visual effects and ended up being one of the lowest grossing Marvel Studios films ever produced.
