{"id":16596,"date":"2023-05-01T14:18:16","date_gmt":"2023-05-01T18:18:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=16596"},"modified":"2023-05-01T14:18:16","modified_gmt":"2023-05-01T18:18:16","slug":"gkids-acquires-north-american-rights-to-the-first-slam-dunk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=16596","title":{"rendered":"GKIDS Acquires North American Rights to &#8220;The First Slam Dunk&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Indie distributor Gkids<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>has acquired North American distribution rights for blockbuster Japanese animation film, &#8220;<i>T<strong>he First Slam Dunk<\/strong>&#8220;<\/i> from studio Toei Animation, finally has a window for its English theatrical release.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Based on Takehiko Inoue\u2019s best-selling manga <i>Slam Dunk<\/i>, which was serialized from 1990-1996 in Shonen Jump and spawned several anime movies in the \u201990s, &#8220;<i><strong>The First Slam Dunk<\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0<\/i>marks the first new feature-length film from the franchise in nearly three decades, as well as Inoue\u2019s directorial debut. The story focuses on a point guard Ryota Miyagi and his Shohoku High School basketball teammates take the stage at the Inter-High School National Championship.<\/p>\n<p>Since the film released in Japan on Dec. 3, the movie has earned $212 million at the global box office and became the 7th highest-grossing Japanese film of all time (via <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/film\/news\/the-first-slam-dunk-china-box-office-opening-1235592067\/\"><i>Variety<\/i><\/a>), which is a testament to how popular <i>Slam Dunk <\/i>has managed to stay over thirty years following its debut. The film was also awarded this year\u2019s Japan Academy Prize for best animation of the year.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Featuring the voices of Shugo Nakamura, Jun Kasama, Shin&#8217;ichir\u014d Kamio, Subaru Kimura, &amp; Kenta Miyake. This looks like good fun!
