{"id":20088,"date":"2023-11-09T16:59:31","date_gmt":"2023-11-09T21:59:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=20088"},"modified":"2023-11-09T16:59:31","modified_gmt":"2023-11-09T21:59:31","slug":"disney-to-continue-licensing-to-streamers-says-ceo-bob-iger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=20088","title":{"rendered":"Disney to Continue Licensing to Streamers, Says CEO Bob Iger"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Disney will continue its practice of licensing some of its content to streaming services, but it will not \u201cchase bucks\u201d by giving away its \u201ccore brands,\u201d says CEO Bob Iger.<br \/><br \/>In a statement to investors, Iger said that <a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?s=disney\">Disney<\/a> has already been licensing programming to <a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?s=netflix\">Netflix,<\/a> noting that \u201cwe\u2019re actually in discussion with them now about some opportunities, but I wouldn\u2019t expect that we will license our core brands to them. Those are real, obviously competitive advantages for us and differentiators.\u201d<br \/><br \/>His comments stand in stark contrast to his stance in January of 2022, when he was quoted as saying that licensing to Netflix would be akin to \u201cselling nuclear weapons technology to a Third World country.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>According to Iger\u2019s statement this week, \u201cDisney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, for instance, are all doing very, very well on our platform, and I don\u2019t see why, just to basically chase bucks, we should do that when they are really really important building blocks to the current and future of our streaming business.\u201d<br \/><br \/>Other studios have been receptive to a licensing strategy. <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/tv\/news\/netflix-hbo-shows-license-warner-bros-1235650357\/#:~:text=In%20a%20turnaround%20for%20the%20streaming%20wars%2C%20Warner,Warner%20Bros.%20Discovery%20under%20the%20David%20Zaslav%20regime.\">Warner Brothers Discovery<\/a>, for example, has recently licensed some of its significant titles to Netflix, including <em><strong>Insecure<\/strong> <\/em>and <em><strong>Dune<\/strong><\/em>. Other streamers have also been working with Netflix, including NBCUniversal and Paramount, which agreed to license its animated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startrek.com\/news\/star-trek-prodigy-to-stream-on-netflix\"><em><strong>Star Trek: Prodigy<\/strong><\/em><\/a> after the series was cancelled at Paramount+.<br \/><br \/>Despite recent budget cuts at the Magic Kingdom, Iger expressed optimism for the near term, while acknowledging that the studio may have been too lavish with its output over the past few years. <br \/><br \/>\u201cAt the time the pandemic hit,\u201d Iger said, \u201cwe were leaning into a huge increase in how much we were making and I\u2019ve always felt that quantity can be actually a negative when it comes to quality. And I think that\u2019s exactly what happened.
