You know, sit by a pool.\u00a0Decide what swimsuit to wear.\u00a0Order a few cocktails.\u00a0And order some magazines.\u00a0You know, on eBay. It\u2019s not that easy from 2007. And read them.\u00a0And sort of as Elspeth, think about all the people who are in the magazines who weren\u2019t her.\u00a0 Because, her vanity knows no bounds.\u00a0And that was preparation.<\/p>\n<p>But it was when I came back from that vacation and landed in the house that we filmed &#8220;<strong>Saltburn<\/strong>&#8221; at, and I had opted to stay in the house itself.\u00a0 And I opened my curtains and there were the catering trucks outside.\u00a0And I thought, oh, have I made a terrible mistake?\u00a0 Just like that line in the movie, many people get lost in &#8220;<strong>Saltburn<\/strong>.&#8221; Or, you\u2019ll never leave.\u00a0I was like, I\u2019m never leaving.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Cause the grounds are huge and I don\u2019t have a car.\u00a0And I\u2019m stuck here.\u00a0And it was kind of mad and intense.\u00a0But was a wonderful decision because the family were so generous. I had a bedroom in the house.\u00a0I never saw all the rooms in the house. I mean, there were whole staircases I never even entered upon.\u00a0Whatever you\u2019re picturing as to the scale of this house, just quadruple it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:\u00a0I got to say, just these last few years, Rosamund, your work has just never been better.\u00a0 And that\u2019s saying a lot.\u00a0You know whether it\u2019s \u201cRadioactive\u201d or \u201cI Care a Lot.\u201d\u00a0And I\u2019m just wondering, when you read Emerald\u2019s screenplay for the first time, what was it about Elspeth that you saw in her?\u00a0Like, how did you find your point of connection to embrace the outrageous vanity of this character?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ROSAMUND:\u00a0 Thank you for those lovely words.\u00a0 I think she\u2019s a very unusual matriarch.<\/p>\n<p>Because she\u2019s almost completely disinterested in her own children.\u00a0And in order to assuage that part of her that can\u2019t really connect, she tries very hard to connect with outsiders because that\u2019s a lot easier.\u00a0Somebody who is disposable and can be asked to leave is a lot easier than committing to understanding your own family.\u00a0So, she loves a kind of a case.\u00a0A project.\u00a0And Oliver Quick, played by Barry Keoghan, is the perfect project. Because he seems vulnerable, and he will benefit from her benevolent gaze.<\/p>\n<p>And she will feel better about herself because she can play the benevolent goddess who astounds him.\u00a0And bewitches him.\u00a0And she loves nothing more than to bewitch someone. But at the same time, she doesn\u2019t actually want someone to get too close. All these colors, I think, Emerald put in her script.\u00a0As well as this person who\u2019s sort of emotionally anorexic on some level that she starves herself of any real feeling.<\/p>\n<p>So, when something very traumatic does happen to her, she\u2019s so terrified of what would happen if she let it in, she just buries it.\u00a0And I thought okay, that\u2019s going to be a very interesting thing to play.\u00a0There\u2019s one thing where she can just not really look at something in the eye and smother it with social conversation.\u00a0But it\u2019s another thing when something really meaningful happens.\u00a0And she has to behave in exactly the same way and carry on with the chit chat.\u00a0That\u2019s something I want to see and that\u2019s something I want to play.\u00a0 So, I mean, it\u2019s Emerald\u2019s creation.\u00a0I think I just sort of had to not get in the way of it.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Q : Was there a template for you in creating in Elspeth? Have you witnessed someone like her that helped you bring her to life?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ROSAMUND:\u00a0 I definitely have, Yes.\u00a0 You know, growing up in the UK, and at various times being in those sort of milieus, people who\u2019ve made me uncomfortable. It was interesting.\u00a0 For all those times when I\u2019ve been made to feel uncomfortable, it was a kind of payback.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The people who you don\u2019t quite know what you\u2019ve done wrong.\u00a0But There\u2019s something about you that doesn\u2019t fit. So, to be on the other side of that, even you tell them you\u2019ve done something.\u00a0And they say, \u201cHow clever.\u201d\u00a0And you know that\u2019s not a compliment.\u00a0 Even though it\u2019s a nice word.\u00a0And it should be nice. It somehow isn\u2019t.\u00a0 You know, it\u2019s that person.\u00a0 And I\u2019ve seen it.\u00a0And I\u2019ve been around it.\u00a0All the bizarre ways in which the English have this codified social behavior.\u00a0And nobody tells you what the code is.\u00a0But you certainly know when you break a rule.<\/p>\n<p>But you don\u2019t quite know what it is.\u00a0 But you\u2019re aware that. By the folie a deux that descends that you\u2019ve done something wrong.\u00a0So, it was really fun for me to be kind of on the inside.\u00a0Keeping people out.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20345\" src=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn3-1.jpg\" alt=\"Saltburn, pic2\" width=\"1018\" height=\"814\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn3-1.jpg 1018w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn3-1-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn3-1-768x614.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn3-1-696x557.jpg 696w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn3-1-525x420.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1018px) 100vw, 1018px\" \/>@Photo by Courtesy of Prime &#8211; \u00a9\u00a0Amazon Content Services LLC<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q :\u00a0You talk about Barry Keoghan, Gabrielle from Spain says, \u201cHow can you best describe Barry as an actor?\u00a0 What was it like to act with him in the film?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ROSAMUND:\u00a0 Barry\u2019s a maverick.\u00a0He has so many different temperatures.\u00a0And you never quite know what you\u2019re going to get.\u00a0And so, by the time we came to shoot the very, sort of, final bits of the film where Elspeth and Oliver have some time alone.\u00a0But you\u2019ll know what I\u2019m talking about.\u00a0 I had seen other significant scenes of the film.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And obviously Elspeth is in a vulnerable position.\u00a0And I thought I wonder what\u2019s going to happen to Elspeth after.\u00a0As this scene plays out.\u00a0The camera keeps rolling.\u00a0And Barry is so unpredictable.\u00a0You just have to kind of let it happen. But it\u2019s thrilling. It\u2019s thrilling to work with.\u00a0And we just, as a cast, we got on so well.<\/p>\n<p>We all got on so well.\u00a0We kind of had that feeling that we\u2019d walk through flames for Emerald and do whatever she asked of us. And everybody had something interesting to do. You know, of equal weight.\u00a0 It\u2019s a real ensemble.\u00a0And we all played our part.\u00a0And we all had a kind of ingredient, a specific flavor.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I have to say, Rosamund, it is a terrific ensemble.\u00a0And every character is so fully realized and so dynamic.\u00a0And one actor I really also feel, in addition to you, has just been doing the best work of his career in more recent years is Richard E Grant.\u00a0And I\u2019m wondering, working with him, the volley that you have with him, you know, go off script and kind of improvise a little with him.\u00a0What was it like with Richard E Grant?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ROSAMUND:\u00a0 [laugh] I was obviously thrilled when they said that Richard was going to be Sir James.\u00a0I thought it was perfect.\u00a0You know, everything from his hair to his eyes.\u00a0I mean, one of my favorite moments of the film is just when this first scene Oliver comes in, and Richard and Jacob are watching \u201c<strong>Superbad<\/strong>\u201d together just in hysterics.<\/p>\n<p>And I just find that so endearing.\u00a0And it\u2019s also exactly what you don\u2019t expect the British aristocracy to be doing is sort of sitting in a kind of slightly disheveled armchair watching \u201c<strong>Superbad<\/strong>.\u201d But it\u2019s pitch perfect.\u00a0And he\u2019s very funny, and very professional as well.\u00a0He\u2019s very punctual.\u00a0It&#8217;s always good when you get the old heroes who come in and, show exactly how to behave.\u00a0To younger cast as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q : What elements from your own life did you draw upon to play this character?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ROSAMUND:\u00a0I think I\u2019ve touched on that already.\u00a0Only that obviously 2006, 2007, which is the timeframe of the film, was just a couple of years after we made \u201c<strong>Pride and Prejudice<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0 And I remember that era very well.\u00a0I was kind of in magazines and stuff and would\u2019ve been photographed out and about in London.\u00a0And remembered kind of what a tough time it was for women.\u00a0It was even more. Everybody was ready to catch, wanting to catch you falling out of a cab, hoping that you\u2019d go to a premier looking great.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And then a few hours later they could catch you having had one too many to drink, with sweaty armpits.\u00a0Or whatever it was that was just they were ready to shame women in such a big way.\u00a0And that\u2019s a kind of ingredient in the film. It informs Venetia, my daughter\u2019s character.\u00a0And even some of Elspeth\u2019s lines about her own daughter.\u00a0Her dismissive kind of impatience with her bulimia.\u00a0And what she calls sexual incontinence is just flippantly thrown away.\u00a0So judgmental.\u00a0But that was the time. The time was incredibly judgmental.\u00a0So, yeah.\u00a0I mean, I lived through it.\u00a0We all did, probably, on this call.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20346\" src=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn1-2.jpg\" alt=\"Saltburn, pic3\" width=\"1020\" height=\"802\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn1-2.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn1-2-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn1-2-768x604.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn1-2-696x547.jpg 696w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn1-2-534x420.jpg 534w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1020px) 100vw, 1020px\" \/>@Photo by Courtesy of Prime &#8211; \u00a9\u00a0Amazon Content Services LLC<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q :\u00a0 You\u2019re always throwing yourself so deeply into your characters.\u00a0\u201cSaltburn\u201d has stayed with me since I\u2019ve seen it.\u00a0How long did it take you to shake off the feeling of this movie and playing this character after you were finished filming?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ROSAMUND: It takes a while, actually.\u00a0And one of the weird things is because Elspeth doesn\u2019t experience emotion in the way that film characters normally do, even though a kind of huge tragedy befalls her, that kind of went into my system in some sort of deep way.\u00a0But you don\u2019t get the normal outlet that you would in a kind of emotionally proficient kind of character, I suppose.<\/p>\n<p>So, it was very surprising because a few months later we did ADR for the film.\u00a0And Emerald needed me to redo the scream. Which we never see.\u00a0Because Emerald has great respect for that kind of grief.\u00a0But they needed to get a better sound quality on it.\u00a0And I thought oh my gosh, how am I ever going to go back there.<\/p>\n<p>And then I\u2019m in a sound booth and all I had to do was remember that moment.\u00a0And remember what she saw.\u00a0And it was right there.\u00a0So, that\u2019s when you realize when a film\u2019s got under your skin.\u00a0Because scratch the surface and it\u2019s still right there. That\u2019s the really weird thing about our job.<\/p>\n<p>Is how quickly you can be taken back.\u00a0And it\u2019s like this state dependent memory that I know people cleverer than I have written about.\u00a0But it\u2019s a really interesting thing.\u00a0So, in answer to your question, they do linger around.\u00a0I say, I just go home and cook the dinner.\u00a0And I\u2019m back to myself.\u00a0But my partner definitely says that is not true.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Q :\u00a0Well, I love promising a woman Emerald\u2019s first.<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>ROSAMUND:\u00a0 Me too. I mean, she\u2019s extraordinary.\u00a0Everything she did on this film, the way she got every department on side, wanting to make this film for her, and do the best version of the film for her, I\u2019ve never been a\u00a0 part of anything like it.\u00a0Not like she does it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q :\u00a0What is it about Emerald, Rosamund, that makes her such a great actor\u2019s director?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ROSAMUND:\u00a0 I think it\u2019s because you want into her world.\u00a0Her brain.\u00a0In the way that Oliver wants into Saltburn.\u00a0Everybody around it.\u00a0We want into her mind. You know who created this brilliant thing.\u00a0And so, when she shares her mind, you just want in on it.\u00a0You want to hear.\u00a0You want to listen.\u00a0And there were sort of lovely details.\u00a0Do you remember there\u2019s a scene where Elspeth is out having a drink with Oliver before everybody else has come down for dinner?\u00a0And we were discussing what snacks would be there while they have their cocktail.\u00a0And she said, \u201cWell, it has to be Bombay mix.\u201d\u00a0 Do you know what I mean?<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know how Bombay mix goes around the world.\u00a0But anyway, she said, \u201cIt has to be Bombay mix.\u201d\u00a0And she said, \u201cOh.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cI think Elspeth would only be picking out the bits she likes.\u201d\u00a0 So, I was like that\u2019s brilliant.\u00a0Okay.\u00a0She\u2019s the one who takes out the little green peas from the Bombay mix.\u00a0And just leaves those kind of yellow sticks for everybody else. I thought, that\u2019s Elspeth.\u00a0I don\u2019t need to hear anything more.\u00a0That\u2019s the best bit of direction.\u00a0It\u2019s that kind of specificity.\u00a0Because actually that\u2019s what you need.\u00a0You need a little chink of light that can just illuminate everything.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-20347\" src=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn5-1024x746.jpg\" alt=\"Saltburn, pic4\" width=\"696\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn5-1024x746.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn5-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn5-768x560.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn5-696x507.jpg 696w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn5-576x420.jpg 576w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn5-324x235.jpg 324w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn5.jpg 1054w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/>@Photo by Courtesy of Prime &#8211; \u00a9\u00a0Amazon Content Services LLC<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q :\u00a0Creating this cold, yet fake-loving family worked really to craft that kind of rich and elite world that Saltburn thrives in.\u00a0But how did you collaborate with the cast?\u00a0What did you do as a cast together to create that dynamic?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ROSAMUND:\u00a0 Well one thing is that Emerald insists that nobody goes off set into their own kind of world while we\u2019re shooting.\u00a0There\u2019s no kind of retreating to a trailer or a dressing room or something.\u00a0She wants everybody to hang out in the same space.\u00a0So, we had a kind of sitting room in the house that was our green room.\u00a0And everybody was there.\u00a0You know, everybody.\u00a0 From the family to the guys playing the footmen, and Paul Rhys playing the butler, Duncan.\u00a0Which is also a brilliant character.\u00a0He kind of is the house.<\/p>\n<p>He will remain forever unchanged.\u00a0I think you can go back in 30 years and Duncan would be looking exactly the same.\u00a0So, I think that\u2019s one thing. And we laughed a lot.\u00a0We just laughed.\u00a0And we played games.\u00a0And played cards.\u00a0And played kind of silly word games.\u00a0 And my children were around.<\/p>\n<p>Which is a great icebreaker for everybody.\u00a0And so, they played with everybody.\u00a0And just having sort of children on set, it takes your mind off things.\u00a0And that was it really.\u00a0You know, there was a very familial atmosphere.\u00a0 And we had great producers.\u00a0 Josey McNamara and Margot Robbie. They were around.\u00a0And ever present.\u00a0And you just felt that we were all making the same film.\u00a0It was really.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q :\u00a0You know, one of my favorite scenes in the movie Rosamund, and it\u2019s just because of this dynamic that, all these fully realized characters and the chemistry between you all.\u00a0 It\u2019s sort of a simpler scene.\u00a0But when you\u2019re all having breakfast around the table.\u00a0And all the cast is together.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ROSAMUND: Yes, all together.\u00a0 And yet, as you say, whoever asked the question.\u00a0 You know, everyone in their own world as well. So, it\u2019s this curious thing where you\u2019re comfortable, and companionable, and very at ease in one another\u2019s company.\u00a0But nobody really knows how one another is feeling.\u00a0It\u2019s a very odd thing in these families.<\/p>\n<p>The same is when we did sort of little montage things of all of us one evening just watching \u201c<strong>The Ring<\/strong>.\u201d So, they put \u201c<strong>The Ring<\/strong>\u201d on the television, and that was it.\u00a0We just sat and watched \u201c<strong>The Ring<\/strong>.\u201d There\u2019s sort of, you know, with Elspeth, definitely not understanding, she would say, \u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t understand.\u201d\u00a0Elspeth was probably falling asleep until that.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWell, why is her hair like that?\u201d \u201cWhere did she come from?\u00a0From the television?\u201d\u00a0And, you know, the kids all screaming, and Sir James sort of laughing at it, and everybody\u2019s reaction.\u00a0Poor Dear Pamela, terrified.\u00a0Terrified by the whole thing \u2018cause it feels like her.<\/p>\n<p>So, we kept having these things to do as a family that sort of brought us together, and we believe in.\u00a0And even things like at breakfast.\u00a0The caterers asking what everybody thinks their character would eat. Carey brilliantly saying, \u201cI think she\u2019d just be eating a little bit of marmalade on a spoon.\u201d\u00a0Of course.\u00a0Exactly what Poor Dear Pamela would be eating.\u00a0You know, Elspeth\u2019d be having a boiled egg. Touching it probably.\u00a0So, yeah, dinner.\u00a0I love dinner scenes actually.<\/p>\n<p>I really enjoy them because you kind of usually have to sort of settle in and be prepared to be shooting it all day.\u00a0And the same with the wonderful Shepherd\u2019s pie scene, which was obviously not at all fun to shoot. It was dreadful to shoot, but theatrical and brilliant because of the way Emerald conceived of it with the change of light halfway though.\u00a0 And the relentless way we had to go through everybody\u2019s interior experience of that moment, you know?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q : Could you please talk about Jacob Elordi, working together?\u00a0 And what did you know about him before you even started working with him?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ROSAMUND:\u00a0 Well, Emerald had said that she\u2019d cast this incredibly handsome Australian.\u00a0 And I thought, \u201cWell, how\u2019s that gonna work?\u201d\u00a0And then she said, \u201cNo, no. He came in and he read, and it just blew us all away.\u201d\u00a0 nd I still thought, \u201cYeah, but how is he going to capture, you know, the specificity of this English public school boy?\u201d\u00a0And then when I was in L.A., and I met him, and we went for lunch. I mean, it was kind of oblivious what a massive star he is.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So, of course, poor guy, we were constantly besieged by people who were kind of coming up to sort of talk to him.\u00a0And he was very gracious and kind.\u00a0But I realized in that meeting, I also wanted to know about his relationship with his mother, who I\u2019ve later met.\u00a0But I wanted to find out who he was.\u00a0And I just realized in that meeting that he\u2019s the real deal.\u00a0 That he\u2019s a proper actor who puts the work in.<\/p>\n<p>And I just saw it. You just ask a few questions, and you realize you\u2019re dealing with the real deal.\u00a0And what he does in the film is totally astonishing.\u00a0I think he gets it as an English person.\u00a0He\u00a0 gets it pitch perfect.\u00a0It\u2019s so brilliant what he does, especially not coming from that world.\u00a0 I just don\u2019t know quite how he did it actually, in truth.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-20348\" src=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn6-1024x785.jpg\" alt=\"Saltburn, pic5\" width=\"696\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn6-1024x785.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn6-300x230.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn6-768x589.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn6-696x534.jpg 696w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn6-1068x819.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn6-548x420.jpg 548w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn6-80x60.jpg 80w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Saltburn6.jpg 1088w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/>@Photo by Courtesy of Prime &#8211; \u00a9\u00a0Amazon Content Services LLC<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q : It basically means phenomenal performance.\u00a0 He\u2019s having an exceptional fall season, I have to say, too.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ROSAMUND:\u00a0 Yeah.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q :\u00a0What is the importance of Saltburn in regards to social commentary?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ROSAMUND:\u00a0 I think it\u2019s Emerald\u2019s musing on obsession and the way that we\u2019re obsessed with what we can\u2019t have.\u00a0And I think the British aristocracy defines what we can\u2019t have because however much money you make, or however you gain in social standing, what those families have in that house that\u2019s been passed down generation through generation, you can\u2019t have it.<\/p>\n<p>And even if the family falls into, you\u2019re an American businessman and you manage to buy an English stately home, you\u2019re never gonna have what they have because it\u2019s encoded in British life.\u00a0And you\u2019re not gonna get the same respect.\u00a0You\u2019re not gonna move in the same circles.\u00a0It\u2019s this mystifying thing that people can\u2019t buy into.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And I think our current obsession with people on social media, of using Instagram to get inside places that we don\u2019t have access to, you know, we\u2019re doing it all the time.\u00a0But obviously that\u2019s not very cinematic, and Emerald has taken that obsessive nature that is kind of being engendered in all of us by the online world we live in.<\/p>\n<p>And she\u2019s sort of pinpointed it in 2006 in the British aristocracy, which is still a bastion that, yes, you can come through the doors, but you are never gonna belong unless you\u2019re born into it.\u00a0It\u2019s cruel and sinister, I think.\u00a0And having grown up in England, I know about it.\u00a0 I know you can get close, but if you\u2019re not from it, you\u2019ll never belong, you know?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q : What was the best scene for you to play in the film?\u00a0Your favorite moment making?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ROSAMUND:\u00a0 Well, the most fun were all the scenes where we were all together.\u00a0I mean, I think probably the most fun was sitting with Carey talking, in a terribly disparaging and concerned way about the prospective, imminent arrival of Oliver.<\/p>\n<p>And I think that was pretty delicious to do because we just laughed a lot in their kind of awfulness.\u00a0And working with her again with that sort of sisterly way we have.\u00a0We have a sort of deep connection even though we don\u2019t see each other, you know, that regularly.\u00a0That was really lovely.\u00a0 What else?\u00a0I mean, the party scene was just incredible to witness because of the way Emerald conceived of it.<\/p>\n<p>And the way the house was just trashed, and the way that the party was so extreme.\u00a0I mean, even the extras, you know, started hooking up with each other.\u00a0I mean, it was that kind of environment where you felt like anything could happen, and you almost forget you were making a film. It felt that you were at a kind of three-day festival or something.<\/p>\n<p>To the point where, as Elspeth &#8212;\u00a0I had finished my role because Elspeth was sort of retiring to bed.\u00a0And then I went back to sort of the place we had for hair and makeup.\u00a0And I saw this enormous, feathered headdress on the wall.<\/p>\n<p>And I said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0I don\u2019t think Elspeth would go to bed.
