In a recent Variety<\/em> <\/a>\u201cPower of Women\u201d cover story, singer Billie Eilish<\/a> admitted she was \u201cphysically attracted to women,\u201d adding her name to the list of performers who have publicly declared their queer sexuality.<\/p>\r\n

When asked to clarify her remarks further during Variety<\/em>\u2019s Hitmakers<\/a> event on Saturday, the 21-year-old musician said she’d thought her sexuality was obvious: \u201cI didn\u2019t realize people didn\u2019t know…I\u2019m just like, \u2018why can\u2019t we just exist\u2019?<\/p>\r\n

I\u2019ve been doing this for a long time and I just didn\u2019t talk about it. Whoops.\u201d

Eilish added, \u201cIt\u2019s exciting to me because I guess people didn\u2019t know, but it\u2019s cool that they know\u2026I am for the girls.\u201d

In her November interview with Variety<\/em>, Eilish was quoted as saying, \u201cI\u2019ve never really felt I could relate to girls very well. I love them so much. I love them as people. I\u2019m attracted to them as people. I\u2019m attracted to them for real.\u201d Continuing, she added, \u201cI\u2019m physically attracted to them.<\/p>\r\n

But I\u2019m also so intimidated by them and their beauty and their presence.\u201d

Eilish, whose full name is Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O\u2019Connell, was born in Los Angeles in 2001 into a musical family. Her own career could be described as meteoric. When she was 13, she began recording songs with her brother Finneas. As she later recalled, \u201cWe recorded them and put them out on SoundCloud, just for fun.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

One of those songs, \u201cOcean Eyes,\u201d attracted a lot of attention when it was released in November of 2015. Just two months later, she signed a deal with Platoon, a company that specializes in promoting emerging artists.<\/p>\r\n

In May of 2016, she released a music video of the song, directed by Megan Thompson, on her YouTube channel, and in August, she signed with Darkroom and Interscope Records.

Among the singles she released over the next year included \u201cBellyache,\u201d \u201cWatch,\u201d \u201cCopycat, \u201cBitches Broken Hearts,\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019t Smile at Me,\u201d the last of which reached number 14 on the US Billboard 200. Her debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? was released in March of 2019, quickly reaching the top of the Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart. It included the single \u201cWish You Were Gay.\u201d This song has been described a \u201ca jazzy classic pop song where Eilish sings of her wish that a man she likes was gay in order to explain his lack of romantic interest in her.\u201d
