Each category also features an additional nominee, with six performers, films, or series recognized in every race. Leading the charge on the film side are <a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?s=barbie+\"><strong><em>Barbie<\/em><\/strong><\/a> with nine bids and <a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?s=Oppenheimer\"><strong><em>Oppenheimer<\/em><\/strong><\/a> with eight, while <strong><em>Succession<\/em><\/strong> dominated with nine television nominations, a new record.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the list is fairly expected, though it\u2019s great to see that a 2021 rule change permitting foreign language films to be nominated for the top Best Picture categories resulted in the Best Motion Picture \u2013 Drama race matching up 50% with the Best Motion Picture, Non-English Language category, with both honoring <a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?s=Anatomy+of+a+Fall\"><strong><em>Anatomy of a Fall<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?s=past+lives\"><strong><em>Past Lives<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?s=The+Zone+of+Interest\"><strong><em>The Zone of Interest<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are still a few head-scratching inclusions and omissions worth taking a look at, whether or not they\u2019ll affect the upcoming Oscar race or have any impact on this upcoming summer\u2019s Emmy season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Surprise: Alma P\u00f6ysti<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Foreign actresses getting nominated isn\u2019t all that rare, but it\u2019s usually either because they\u2019re well-known and have long been acclaimed, like Isabelle Huppert, or a star of a well-regarded film, like this year\u2019s Sandra H\u00fcller, who fits both bills. But neither applies to P\u00f6ysti, the lead in Finland\u2019s nominated <strong><em>Fallen Leaves<\/em><\/strong>. Credit Lynsey Weatherspoon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Snub: The Color Purple<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an unusual year in that half of the current Oscar <a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/news\/december-oscar-frontrunners-whats-ahead-for-best-picture\/\">Best Picture frontrunners<\/a> are considered comedies or musicals. Six slots in the Best Motion Picture \u2013 Musical or Comedy category at the Globes should have been enough to hold them all. DeMille recipient didn\u2019t have any more luck with a more familiar group of voters. Courtesy A24<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Surprise: Joaquin Phoenix<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Phoenix being announced as a nominee in itself isn\u2019t a surprise, since he has six previous nominations and two wins, for <strong><em>Walk the Line<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Joker<\/em><\/strong>. But if he was going to be recognized for anything this year, the obvious choice felt like the epic <strong><em>Napoleon<\/em><\/strong>, from Globe-friendly director Ridley Scott. Photograph by Graeme Hunter\/HBO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Snub: Nicholas Braun<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While he wasn\u2019t necessarily expected to make the very crowded catch-all television supporting actor category, which draws from drama series, comedy series, limited series, anthology series, and TV movies, three-time Emmy nominee Braun\u2019s absence is notable because of who did make the cut. <strong><em>Succession<\/em><\/strong> bested all previous series with a whopping eight acting nominations, all of whom were nominated alongside Braun at the Emmys this past summer. CR: Chuck Hodes\/FX.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Surprise: Abby Elliott<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The comedy that\u2019s coming for Abbott\u2019s trophy, <strong><em>The Bear<\/em><\/strong>, demolished last year\u2019s performance with a startling showing in all four acting categories. While last year\u2019s defending champion for Best Television Series \u2013 Musical or Comedy, <strong><em>Abbott Elementary<\/em><\/strong>, and star Quinta Brunson will both have an opportunity to repeat their wins, supporting actor Tyler James Williams, who won last year\u2019s prize, and his costars Janelle James and Emmy winner Sheryl Lee Ralph were all shut out.
