{"id":21257,"date":"2024-01-02T14:10:01","date_gmt":"2024-01-02T19:10:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=21257"},"modified":"2024-01-02T14:17:27","modified_gmt":"2024-01-02T19:17:27","slug":"anya-taylor-joy-wont-appear-in-nabokovs-laughter-in-the-dark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=21257","title":{"rendered":"Anya Taylor-Joy Won&#8217;t Appear in Nabokov&#8217;s &#8216;Laughter in the Dark&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>@The Queen&#8217;s Gambit\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Anya Taylor-Joy has been rebuffed in her quest to appear in a film adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov\u2019s 1930s-era novel <strong><em>Laughter in the Dark<\/em><\/strong>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2024\/01\/01\/how-a-script-doctor-found-his-own-voice\"><em>New Yorker<\/em><\/a> article about script doctor Scott Frank.<br \/><br \/>Frank had previously worked with Taylor-Joy on <a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?s=The+Queen\u2019s+Gambit\"><em><strong>The Queen\u2019s Gambit<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, an acclaimed Netflix series in which the actress played the role of chess prodigy Beth Harmon, struggling with substance abuse. The series won several Emmy awards and propelled Taylor-Joy to stardom. Frank also contributed his talents to another Netflix production, the <a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?s=Godless\"><em><strong>Godless<\/strong><\/em><\/a> mini-series.<br \/><br \/>The <em>New Yorker<\/em> article revealed that Frank wanted to adapt the Nabokov novel together with Megan Abbott, but Netflix gave the project a thumbs-down. <strong><em>Laughter in the Dark<\/em><\/strong>, viewed by literary historians as a precursor to Nabokov\u2019s iconic <em>Lolita<\/em>, is the story of a middle-aged art critic who develops an infatuation with a 17-year-old girl. It was originally published in Russian in 1932; an English translation titled <em>Camera Obscura<\/em>, by Winifred Roy, appeared in 1936. Nabokov disapproved of Roy\u2019s translation and did his own, titled <strong><em>Laughter in the Dark<\/em><\/strong>, published in 1938.<br \/><br \/>Frank had been hoping to do a film noir adaptation of the novel until the project was redlighted. Abbott was quoted as saying, \u201cWe talked about the femme fatale as this character who gets short shrift. But really great noir is always toying with that. Scott wanted the female point of view to be foregrounded.\u201d<br \/><br \/>The prolific script doctor\/screenwriter, meanwhile, is busy with other projects, including the <em><strong>Monsieur Spade<\/strong><\/em> series that stars Clive Owen and that will debut this month. He\u2019s also reportedly working on another project for Netflix, an adaptation of <em>Department Q<\/em>, a crime novel by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen.<br \/><br \/>Anna Taylor-Joy, whose acting career was jump-started by her appearance in <em><strong>The Queen\u2019s Gambit<\/strong><\/em>, has also recently achieved notoriety for her roles in <strong>The Witch, Thoroughbreds<\/strong>, and <em><strong>Amsterdam<\/strong><\/em>.
