The comedy&#8217;s script, which was co-written by director Greta Gerwig and her husband, Noah Baumbach, is based on the titular doll line by Mattel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \">Apatow, who penned the scripts for such movies as <i><strong>The 40-Year-Old Virgin<\/strong><\/i> and <strong><i>Knocked Up<\/i><\/strong>, expressed his thoughts on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JuddApatow\/status\/1743739978931388609?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1743739978931388609%7Ctwgr%5E63c6171c2b451849bb687cd43f650a715f6d7a3b%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fvariety.com%2F2024%2Ffilm%2Fnews%2Fjudd-apatow-disagrees-barbie-oscar-race-adapted-screenplay-1235863387%2F\">X\/Twitter<\/a> about the classification yesterday. He noted that &#8220;It&#8217;s insulting to the writers to say they were working off of existing material. There was no existing material or story. There was a clear box.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/awards\/barbie-moved-adapted-screenplay-oscars-1235848136\/\">Variety<\/a>\u00a0exclusively reported on Wednesday that <strong><em>Barbie<\/em><\/strong> will be considered in the best adapted screenplay category in the Oscar nomination race. The news comes after its filmmakers campaigning for the original screenplay classification.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \">Each awards body and voting group has its own subset of rules for movies in terms of which screenplay category they can submit for or ultimately be nominated in. Many films that include characters that appeared in earlier media &#8211; including previous Academy Award nominees <strong><em>Toy Story 3<\/em><\/strong>, <em><strong>Borat 2<\/strong><\/em>, <strong><em>Before Sunset<\/em><\/strong> and <em><strong>Before Midnight<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; were ultimately classified as adapted screenplays.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ILfuVd\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hgKElc\">AMPAS specifically states that the <\/span><\/span>Oscar category for Best Adapted Screenplay is for movies based on some sort of preexisting work \u2013 whether that be a play, a book or a sequel. The organization also notes that the Best Original Screenplay category is for purely new works created by the scribes, based on no source material other than their imagination.<\/p>\n<div id=\"adm-inline-article-ad-1\" class=\"admz \">\n<div class=\"adma boomerang \" data-device=\"Desktop\" data-width=\"300\">\n<div class=\"pmc-adm-boomerang-pub-div ad-text\" data-priority=\"10\">\n<div id=\"gpt-variety-article-mid-article-uid0\" class=\" adw-300 adh-250\" data-is-adhesion-ad=\"\" data-google-query-id=\"CLaj3YKUzIMDFWCPywEdC2MLCw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/8352\/Variety\/ros\/mid-article_0__container__\">\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \">The Writers Branch executive committee of AMPAS likely included the <strong><em>Barbie<\/em><\/strong> film in the adapted screenplay category because the eponymous character and her boyfriend, Ken, were pre-existing dolls. However, the Writers Guild of America has designated the movie to be an original work. Therefore, the comedy will remain in that category at the upcoming WGA Awards ceremony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \">Gerwig, who became the first woman to helm a billion-dollar movie, has previously been nominated for three Academy Awards in her career. Her first two films, <em><strong>Lady Bird<\/strong><\/em> and <strong><em>Little Women<\/em><\/strong>, were also both nominated for their scripts; the former was nominated in the original screenplay category, and the latter was nominated in the adapted screenplay race. She also received a Best Director nomination for <em><strong>Lady Bird<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \">Eligible voting members of the branch will only be able to cast votes for the <strong><em>Barbie<\/em><\/strong> script.
