Neve Campbell has publicly addressed the possibly of returning to the acclaimed Scream<\/em><\/strong> film series to reprise her role of iconic final girl Sidney Prescott. She told Variety<\/a> yesterday at the BAFTA Tea event at the Maybourne hotel in Beverly Hills that she could see herself coming back some day “under the right circumstances.”<\/p>\n

The Saturn Award-winning actress commented on the subject once again after she originally announced in June 2022 that she was leaving the franchise. At the time, she said she didn’t feel she offered proper compensation to return for the series’ sixth entry.<\/p>\n

Campbell’s comment comes after Scream 7<\/em><\/strong> has been plagued by\u00a0 several production issues. The conflict began with the controversial firing of returning star Melissa Barrera, who played lead character Sam Carpenter in 2022’s Scream<\/em><\/strong><\/a> and last year’s Scream 6<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. The actress was let go from the horror movie franchise’s proposed sixth sequel after she shared pro-Palestine posts on social media in November.<\/p>\n

Days later, it was also reported that\u00a0 that Barrera’s co-star Jenna Ortega also wouldn’t be returning for Scream 7<\/strong><\/em>. The latter actress played Sam’s sister Tara in the film series’ last two installments.<\/p>\n

It is currently unknown why Ortega left Scream 7<\/em><\/strong>. But it has been reported that her commitments to her other projects, including the second season of the Emmy-nominated Netflix horror comedy series Wednesday<\/em><\/strong>, presented scheduling issues.<\/p>\n

Then, a month after that, director Christopher Landon also left Scream 7<\/strong><\/em>. At the time, he said his “dream job turned into a nightmare.”<\/p>\n

The filmmaker, who rose to pro mince in the horror genre in part by helming the horror comedies Happy Death Day<\/i><\/strong> and Freaky<\/strong><\/em>, was set to replace Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. The duo, who garnered acclaim when they directed the 2019 black comedy horror movie Ready or Not<\/em><\/strong>, went on to helm Scream<\/em><\/strong> and Scream 6<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

While Campbell<\/a> said she would consider returning to the Scream<\/strong><\/em> franchise to once again play Sidney Prescott, she added that she has “no idea what their plans are.” Her statements seem to indicate that Spyglass Media Group, which served as the production company on the series’ last two installments, have not reached out to Campbell about her return yet.<\/p>\n

In Campbell’s full statement at the BAFTA Tea event, which she attended in support of her former Party of Five<\/em><\/strong> co-star Michael Goorjian, who wrote, directed and stars in the Oscar-shortlisted Amerikatsi<\/strong><\/em>, she said: “[I would come back] under the right circumstances. I honestly have no idea what their plans are. I know a lot has gone on around it and I’m sure they’re spinning a little bit at the moment.<\/p>\n

“These movies mean a lot to us and they mean a lot to the fans. I go to these conventions sometimes and I meet the fans and they’re frantic about these films. They love them. These films mean a lot to them and these characters mean a lot to them. So even for their sake, I would love to see it continue,” the actress added.<\/p>\n

While also speaking about the problems plaguing Scream 7<\/strong><\/em>, Campbell noted: “I know things are spinning at the moment, and I would imagine they are spinning at the top trying to figure out what they’re going to do. I would not be surprised to get a call.<\/p>\n

“But at the same time, I made a strong statement a few years ago, which is I did not believe that the way that I was treated would’ve happened if I had been a male and that I deserve a certain thing for having carried this franchise for as long as I have,” the actress added.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on that decision now, Campbell said she took a stand, but “not in an egotistical way.” Instead, she wanted to fight for what she believes is right. “We have to stand up for women in this business and know what we’re worth. That hasn\u2019t changed for me,” she continued during her interview with Variety. “So, if they were to come back to me, it would have to be with a respectful offer that I felt was in keeping with what I bring to this franchise.”<\/p>\n

The actress added that the Scream<\/em><\/strong> films “mean a lot to me. They mean a lot to [series producer Kevin Williamson, who also wrote the first, second and fourth entries]. They meant a lot to [the late Wes Craven, who directed the first four installments]. They meant a lot to all of these castmembers, and we would all love to see this franchise continue. I would hate to see it burn. So, we’ll see.”<\/p>\n

Williamson said he would love to see Campbell reprise her role of Sidney in the series. “I would give her the money. I’m sure there’s a number they can agree on that will make them both happy, so hopefully one day they will figure that all out,” the franchise’s creator noted during a podcast appearance on Happy Horror Time<\/a> last September.<\/p>\n

The series’ producers have not yet publicly commented on its future, including if the sixth entry’s remaining cast members, including Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown, would return for the next installment. But with no current leads or helmer, and no indication that the former lead has been contacted, it remains unclear if the Scream<\/em><\/strong> film franchise will get a sixth follow-up any time soon.<\/p>\n
