Jonathan Majors’ body-building drama Magazine Dreams<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is seeking a new distributor, nearly a year after Searchlight Pictures acquired the rights to the feature. The specialty arm of Walt Disney Studios has returned the project’s rights to the filmmakers, who will now shop it to other buyers, according to The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The decision comes several weeks after Majors<\/a> was convicted of assault and harassment. The Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania<\/i><\/strong> star was found guilty after he was involved in an incident with his ex-partner, Grace Jabbari.<\/p>\n

Searchlight delivered the news to the Magazine Dreams<\/em><\/strong> team, which is led by writer-director Elijah Bynum, late last week that it decided to no longer release the project. The distributor has not offered a public statement about its decision.<\/p>\n

Magazine Dreams<\/em><\/strong> received critical acclaim when it had its world premiere last January at Sundance. During the festival, Majors’ performance as amateur body builder Killian Maddox, who’s determined to achieve his dream of going professional despite the damage it does to his body, earned positive reviews and early awards buzz. Bynum was also hailed as Hollywood’s next big helmer.<\/p>\n

Searchlight subsequently bought the movie for a reported $2 million the month after its premiere. The drama was originally scheduled to be released theatrically on December 8 to support a planned awards season campaign.<\/p>\n

However, in October Walt Disney Studios removed the film from its release schedule, ahead of Majors’ trial. The company’s decision was based on both the assault allegations against the actor and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.<\/p>\n

After Majors was arrested in New York on March 25, his assault trail began on November 29. During that time, he pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor assault and harassment charges.<\/p>\n

On December 18, the Creed III<\/em><\/strong> actor was found guilty of one count of reckless assault in the 3rd degree and a charge of harassment as a violation. His sentencing is set for February 6, which puts Magazine Dreams<\/i><\/strong>‘ fate into question.<\/p>\n

Besides Searchlight returning the project’s distributor rights to its filmmakers, the actor has faced career fallout with his other projects. Marvel Studios fired him from his role of the villainous Kang the Conqueror, which he debuted in the first season of Loki<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Last week, Lionsgate also fired Majors from the movie 48 Hours in Vegas<\/em><\/strong>, in which he was cast to play Dennis Rodman. The film now looking for a new star and another distributor.<\/p>\n

Jennifer Fox, Dan Gilroy, Jeffrey Soros and Simon Horsman produced Magazine Dreams<\/i><\/strong>. Besides starring in the drama, Majors also served as an executive producer under his production banner Tall Street Productions, along with Luke Rodgers and Andrew Blau. Besides Majors, the movie also stars Haley Bennett, Taylour Paige, Mike O’Hearn, Harrison Page and Harriet Sansom Harris.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The project’s fate remains unclear, as finding a distributor that will give Magazine Dreams <\/em><\/strong>a theatrical release may prove difficult now that Searchlight has dropped it. However, it is possible the film will be acquired by a smaller distributor, which will release it via streaming or through VOD.<\/p>\n
