A Japanese auteur Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece High and Low<\/strong>\u00a0will be remade by Spike Lee and starring Denzel Washington.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apple Original Films and A24 will tackle the American version of High and Low<\/b>, based on one of the most acclaimed films of all time. The original Japanese film is loosely based on the novel King’s Ransom by Ed McBain, and follows a suspense story about the kidnapping of a driver’s son who is mistaken for the son of Gondo (Toshiro Mifune), the managing director of a shoe manufacturing company. The investigating police inspector is played by Tatsuya Nakadai, and the criminal is played by Tsutomu Yamazaki.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Director Lee and Washington have been interested in remaking High and Low<\/strong>\u00a0since last spring, and it seems that the U.S. Writers Guild and U.S. Actors Guild strikes have interrupted the filming of Washington’s Gladiator<\/b>\u00a0sequel, giving them time to work out a concrete plan.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Alan Fox and Lee co-wrote the script, and shooting is set to begin in March.<\/p>\n

Kurosawa\u2019s films have been inspired a surplus of remakes and direct homages in his name, one of the most notable one,\u00a0Seven Samurai which\u00a0<\/i>inspired the American Western,\u00a0T<\/strong>he Magnificent Seven<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0also made an great\u00a0impact on war epics and the modern structure of studio films, and in 2022, the British drama film, Living<\/i><\/strong>, is a remake of Kurosawa’s story of life and death,\u00a0Ikiru<\/b><\/i>. Even the Star Wars franchise owes its story of rebels breaching into enemy territory to\u00a0The Hidden Fortress<\/b><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Retelling Kurosawa’s stories is common, but not always received with the warmest praise, as his rich filmography stands among the finest in cinematic history.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Just in 2022, the British drama film,\u00a0Living<\/b><\/i>, is a remake of Kurosawa’s story of life and death,\u00a0Ikiru<\/b><\/i>. Even the Star Wars franchise owes its story of rebels breaching into enemy territory to\u00a0The Hidden Fortress<\/b><\/i>.<\/p>\n

But this isn\u2019t the first time for Spike Lee remaking a beloved international film from an Asian country, as Lee directed an American remake of the groundbreaking\u00a0Park Chan-wook\u00a0revenge thriller,\u00a0Oldboy<\/b>, unfortunately\u00a0<\/i>a film largely rejected by audiences and critics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This will be the fifth time that Lee and Washington have teamed up, following\u00a0Mo’ Better Blues<\/b>,\u00a0Malcolm X<\/b>,\u00a0The Last Game<\/b>, and\u00a0Inside Man<\/b>. Hopefully, it won\u2019t be as bad as\u00a0Oldboy<\/b>.<\/p>\n
