Damien Chazelle<\/a>\u2019s 2022 film Babylon<\/strong> <\/em><\/a>was, by all accounts, a flop. With a budget of $80 million, it grossed a paltry $15 million domestically, though it picked up $48 million overseas<\/a>. Reviews were tepid\u201457% on Rotten Tomatoes<\/em> and C+ on CinemaScore<\/em>\u2014and even the star power of Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie could not persuade the judges to confer any awards on the unfortunate production.<\/p>\r\n

Chazelle had earlier received critical acclaim for another Hollywood-themed film, La La Land<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, the 2016 movie that garnered 14 Oscar nominations and earned him a Best Director trophy, making him the youngest person ever to receive that award.

Babylon<\/strong><\/a> <\/em>focused its lens on the fate of silent-film stars trying to cope with the shift to talkies in the 1920s. Among the scathing reviews was one by Peter Debruge, who wrote in Variety<\/em> that the film was an \u201cexuberantly messy look at La La Land\u2019s early days \u2014 an acid spin on Singin\u2019 in the Rain<\/strong><\/em>.” He added that Babylon<\/strong><\/em> “feels like the last of a certain kind of movie: epic, extravagant and so unreasonably expensive, it would\u2019ve taken pre-pandemic moviegoing habits to make its money back.\u201d

Licking his wounds on a Talking Pictures<\/em><\/a> podcast, the director speculated that the failure of Babylon<\/strong> <\/em>might affect his ability to raise money for his next cinematic venture, though he offered no clues about what any new film would be about.

\u201cCertainly, in financial terms, Babylon didn\u2019t work at all,\u201d Chazelle confessed. \u201cYou try to not have that [a]ffect what you\u2019re doing creatively, but, at some level, it can\u2019t help but affect it. \u2026 I\u2019ve been head in the sand. I\u2019ve been sort of busy writing. So I\u2019ll get a real taste of how it\u2019s changed or not once I get to finish this script and try to actually get it made. I\u2019m in a sort of trepidatious state of mind, but I have no illusions. I won\u2019t get a budget of Babylon<\/em> <\/strong>size any time soon, or at least not on this next one.\u201d

\u201cAnd who knows?\u201d he concluded. \u201cMaybe I won\u2019t be able to get [this next film] made. We\u2019ll have to wait and see.\u201d
