For the second consecutive year, Kore-eda captured the Best Director title, this time for his latest feature, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt23736044\/\"><em><strong>Monster<\/strong><\/em>.<\/a> The prolific director had won the prize a year ago for <em><strong>Broker,<\/strong><\/em> a Korean-language film. <br \/><br \/>Discussing his most recent award, Kore-eda was quoted in <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/03\/hirokazu-kore-eda-samurai-series-japan-film-industry-asian-film-awards-2024-1235854428\/\"><em>Deadline<\/em><\/a> as saying \u201cI\u2019m in a really good spot right now. I\u2019m not forcing myself at all. I\u2019m constantly working. I have good stamina.\u201d As for his future projects, he added that \u201cI\u2019m currently working on a streaming drama I shot last autumn. I\u2019m in the editing phase for that now,\u201d but offered few details other than to say: \u201cWe aren\u2019t sure which streaming service is going to get it yet. But it\u2019s based on a popular NHK series made 40 years ago. It\u2019s a very samurai story. In total, there will be seven episodes.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>On a more somber note, Kore-eda lamented the problems being encountered by his colleagues in the Japanese film industry.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cWe are seeing a lot of new people entering the industry,\u201d he said. \u201cHowever, if people think that means there is a renewal in audiences or the movie scene is happier than before, I can say that is not true. Staff are not making a living in the industry, and it is very hard to keep them working on films. There are now a lot of shows, but they\u2019re not making a living at all. That is the point we have to work on and improve, otherwise it will be very difficult to keep making Japanese movies in the future.\u201d<br \/><br \/>With a screenplay by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0757111\/\">Yuji Sakamoto<\/a>, Kore-eda&#8217;s <em><strong>Monster<\/strong> <\/em>debuted at Cannes last year, winning a Best Screenplay award. \u201cIt was a dream to work with Sakamoto, Kore-eda declared. \u201cI have always admired his work and saw similarities between us. I learned a lot from him.\u201d<br \/><br \/>Both Kore-eda and Sakamoto have recently inked deals with Netflix. Kore-eda\u2019s first project with the streaming service was a series titled <em><strong>The Makanai Cooking for the Maiko House<\/strong><\/em>. Sakamoto debuted on Netflix with the romantic murder mystery <em><strong>In Love and Deep Water.<br \/><br \/><\/strong><\/em>At last night&#8217;s Asian Film Awards ceremony, Ryosuke Hamaguchi\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt28490044\/\"><em><strong>Evil Does Not Exist<\/strong><\/em><\/a> won him the trophy for Best Film, a year after his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt14039582\/\"><em><strong>Drive My Car<\/strong><\/em><\/a> took top honors. He became only the third Japanese director to be nominated for an Academy Award.
