An article in <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/news\/popeye-live-action-movie-chernin-king-features-1235945446\/\"><em>Variety<\/em> <\/a>reveals that he\u2019ll be fighting to the finish in a \u201cbig-budget feature\u201d to be written by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1003636\/\">Michael Caleo.<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>No further details about plot or casting is known, though some months back, <a href=\"https:\/\/thedirect.com\/article\/popeye-movie-2024-dwayne-johnson-release-the-rock\">FoxStar Media<\/a> published a YouTube video trailer teasing that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0425005\/\">Dwayne Johnson<\/a> would be a good choice for the leading role of &#8220;the spinach-loving sailor&#8221; with &#8220;muscles flexing in determination.&#8221;<br \/><br \/>Caleo\u2019s most recent project was the British crime drama, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt18259204\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2\"><em><strong>Sexy Beast<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, a television series that started streaming on Paramount+ in January. Caleo also scripted an episode of <em><strong>The Sopranos<\/strong><\/em> for HBO and co-wrote the screenplay for Luc Besson&#8217;s\u00a0<em><strong> The Family<\/strong><\/em> (2013), starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer.<br \/><br \/>Since first making an appearance in a 1929 cartoon short for Paramount, Popeye has been featured in comic books and video games as well as lending his image to a popular fast-food restaurant franchise. The character also inspired menswear collections and appears as part of the logo for McCall Farms spinach.<br \/><br \/>It\u2019s been 44 years since the last-live action <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0081353\/\">film<\/a> about the crusty sailor, a joint project by Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Productions that Robert Altman directed in 1980. That movie, which earned about $50 million worldwide on a budget of $20 million, starred Robin Williams as Popeye, Shelley Duvall as his girlfriend Olive Oyl, Paul L. Smith as his nemesis Bluto, and Paul Dooley as the hamburger-chomping J. Wellington Wimpy.<br \/><br \/>A decade ago, Sony Pictures Animation hoped to make an animated film about Popeye with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0850733\/\">Genndy Tartakovsky<\/a> but plans never materialized.
