One of the best character actors in contemporary American cinema, <\/span>M. Emmet Walsh<\/b>, passed away last Tuesday in\u00a0 Vermont at the age of 88. The news has been given by his manager <\/span>Sandy Joseph<\/b>. He was born on March 22, 1935 in Ogdensburg, New York.<\/span><\/p>\n

Active since the late \u201860, M. Emmet Walsh has acted in more than 150 movies, working with many of the most important directors like <\/span>Arthur Penn<\/b> (<\/span>Alice\u2019s Restaurant<\/b>, <\/span>Little Big Man<\/b>), <\/span>Peter Bogdanovich<\/b> (<\/span>What\u2019s Up, Doc?<\/b>), <\/span>Sidney Lumet <\/b>(<\/span>Serpico<\/b>), <\/span>Robert Redford<\/b> (<\/span>Ordinary People<\/b>, <\/span>The Milagro Beanfield War<\/b>), <\/span>Mike Nichols <\/b>(<\/span>Silkwood<\/b>), <\/span>Sydney Pollack<\/b> (<\/span>Random Hearts<\/b>). He shared the screen with stars like <\/span>Dustin Hoffman<\/b>, <\/span>Al Pacino<\/b><\/a>, <\/span>Meryl Streep<\/b>, <\/span>Harrison Ford<\/b> and many others.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the early \u201880 M. Emmet Walsh has become a cult actor thanks to his participation in two of the best movies of the decade: he\u2019s been Harrison Ford\u2019s LAPD boss in <\/span>Blade Runner<\/b> by <\/span>Ridley Scott <\/b><\/a>and the corrupted private detective Loren Visser in <\/span>Blood Simple<\/b>, first movie directed in 1984 by <\/span>Joel and Ethan Coen<\/b><\/a>. The final showdown between the \u201cvillain\u201d Walsh and the protagonist <\/span>Frances McDormand<\/b> is without doubt one of the best sequences in the entire Coen Brothers\u2019 career. About his performance in Blood Simple the film critic <\/span>Pauline Kael <\/b>wrote he was the film\u2019s \u201conly colorful performer. He lays on the loathsomeness, but he gives it a little twirl \u2014 a sportiness.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even the legendary <\/span>Roger Ebert<\/b> paid his personal tribute to M. Emmet Walsh and created the hilarious \u201cStanton-Walsh Rule\u201d: no movie in which <\/span>Harry Dean Stanton <\/b>or M. Emmet Walsh acted could be altogether bad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The last movie M. Emmet Walsh participated is <\/span>Outlaw Posse<\/b><\/a>, starred and directed by <\/span>Mario Van Peebles<\/b>, which arrived in theaters just this month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
