It is always a (guilty) pleasure to return to a vampire movie where the undead is an old-fashioned, terrifying thirsty killer. Even if the dark humor behind the whole production makes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt27489557\/\"><b>Abigail<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> some kind of horror comedy, nonetheless the main character &#8211; a young ballerina who plays a wicked game with her victims before trying to slay them &#8211; is shaped way closer to the classic vampire figure, a huge plus in my opinion. The truth is, except for a few examples (<\/span><b>Bran Stoker\u2019s Dracula<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/news\/is-coppolas-megalopolis-turning-into-a-megaflopolis\/\"><b>Francis Ford Coppola<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>The Addiction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><b>Abel Ferrara<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><b>Only Lovers Left Alive<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><b>Jim Jarmusch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) when the vampire becomes a romantic or metaphoric character, something goes missing. Most of the time it\u2019s the sheer, irrational joy of being scared.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Directed by <\/span><b>Matt Bettinelli-Olpin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Tyler Gillett<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Abigail is the reboot of the classic <\/span><b>Dracula\u2019s Daughter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1936), adjusted to the contemporary audience\u2019s taste. The screenplay by <\/span><b>Stephen Shields<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Guy Busick<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides a gripping start, the way some pulp crime-movies from the Nineties had, first of all &#8211; and it couldn\u2019t be otherwise &#8211; <\/span><b>Reservoir Dogs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><b>Quentin Tarantino<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Once the plot brings all the characters in the main setting, the usual old house full of dark corners, the mouse trap game respects all the genre\u2019s rules providing a lot of fun. Abigail is in fact quite entertaining, delivers the right rhythm of storytelling, builds characters who are both funny and in a couple of cases acceptable humans, and most importantly it is actually scary. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Directors quite soon find the right formula: if you want to really experience \u201cEvil\u201d, you have to stare at it. All the close-ups of <\/span><b>Alisha Weir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/Abigail&#8217;s eyes become little by little unsettling until they turn completely frightening. The young actress is totally capable of incarnating first the double face of the monster, its innocence mixed with soulless instinct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23182 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Abigail2.png\" alt=\"Abigail 2\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Abigail2.png 640w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Abigail2-300x199.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a9Courtesy of Universal Pictures<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other side then we have a group of criminals who pretty soon become victims of the vampire, a bunch of roles who are decently portrayed by <\/span><b>Kevin Durand<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Giancarlo Esposito<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Kathryn Newton<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The soul of Abigail is in the end the powerful chemistry between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/trailers\/godizlla-x-kong-the-new-empire-official-trailer-2\/\"><b>Dan Stevens<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/news\/melissa-barrera-talks-about-fired-from-scream-was-a-revelation\/\"><b>Melissa Barrera<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The actor delivers a performance that turns out to be charismatic, repulsive, and hilarious. The actress can be totally considered one of the true, contemporary \u201cScream Queens\u201d: she is reliable, capable of portraying the depth of her character, and ready to fight without becoming unbelievable. In the end, the audience has no choice but to root for Joey, mostly because of Melissa Barrera\u2019s performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if the 109 minutes of the movie are a little bit too much &#8211; especially the showdown could have been a little shorter &#8211; <\/span><b>Abigail<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is basically everything you want to obtain from a mainstream horror movie: a plot that actually drives you into the story, at least three compelling characters, the right amount of tension without exceeding in jump scares or cheap-thrills, gallons of fake blood which guarantee the liberating gory effect. <\/span><b>Abigail<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is all of this, a crazy mix of horror and crime-movie with a splash of dark comedy that delivers sheer entertainment.
