It received a thirteen-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival the other day, and has already been picked up by distributors worldwide, who are aiming for a September 20 release in the United States.<br \/><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-match-factory.com\/about-us.html\">Match Factory<\/a>, whose parent company is Mubi, has already acquired rights to <em><strong>The Substance<\/strong><\/em> in North America, the United Kingdom, Austria, the Benelux countries, Germany, Ireland, and Latin America. The rights-holders are also negotiating for distribution rights in other European and Asian countries, as well as in Australia and New Zealand.<br \/><br \/>Directed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0267287\/\">Coralie Fargeat<\/a>, <em><strong>The Substance<\/strong><\/em> has been described as a \u201cbody horror\u201d film about a once-glamorous actress, played by Moore, who\u2019s being cast aside in favor of a younger woman, played by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm4960279\/\">Margaret Qualley<\/a>. Out of desperation, Moore\u2019s character uses a questionable black-market cell-replicating drug to restore her body image.<br \/><br \/>Fargeat was acclaimed for her 2017 French-language film <em><strong>Revenge<\/strong><\/em>, about a woman (Matilda Lutz) fighting back against the men in her life who had brutally assaulted her. At a press conference in Cannes, Fargeat termed <em><strong>The Substance<\/strong><\/em>\u2019s extreme violence as a metaphor for the violence inflicted on women who are expected to adhere to beauty standards at the expense of their health and well-being.<br \/><br \/>Demi Moore recently appeared as Olivia in the 2022 film T<strong>he Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,<\/strong> and appeared in eight televised episodes of Ryan Murphy\u2019s <em><strong>Feud<\/strong><\/em>. Besides Moore and Qualley, the cast of <em><strong>The Substance<\/strong><\/em> includes Dennis Quaid, Gore Abrams, Hugo Diego Garcia, Olivier Reyna, and Tiffany Hofstetter. <br \/><br \/>In his review for <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/05\/the-substance-review-demi-moore-margaret-qualley-1235923616\/\"><em>Deadline<\/em><\/a>, Damon Wise lauded the aesthetic excellence of <em><strong>The Substance, <\/strong><\/em>writing: \u201cImagine David Lynch\u2019s <em><strong>Mulholland Drive<\/strong><\/em> fused in a telepod with David Cronenberg\u2019s <em><strong>Dead Ringers<\/strong><\/em>, add the unbelievably dynamic pairing of Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, process it through the ultra-vivid color palette that is Fargeat\u2019s hyper-saturated imagination, sprinkle a bit of J.G.
