All rights reserved.<\/p>\r\n<p>Filmmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0783139\/\">Henry Selick<\/a> has revealed that his next project will be a stop-motion animated adaptation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0301274\/\">Neil Gaiman<\/a>\u2019s 2013 novel <a href=\"https:\/\/m.imdb.com\/news\/ni64638447\/?ref_=nws_nwr_li\"><em><strong>The Ocean at the End of the Lane<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/global\/henry-selick-neil-gaiman-pixar-coraline-annecy-1236033866\/\"><em>Variety<\/em>,<\/a> Selick believes Gaiman\u2019s novel to be the author\u2019s crowning achievement, and has said that the film would be \u201calmost a sequel\u201d to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0327597\/?ref_%3Dfn_al_tt_1\"><strong>Coraline<\/strong>,<\/a> his 2009 animation based on another Gaiman novel. <em><strong>Coraline<\/strong> <\/em>depicted the story of a young girl who enters an alternate world through a secret door, only to find that her Other Mother and her parallel family try to keep her there forever.<br \/><br \/>By contrast,<em><strong> The Ocean at the End of the Lane<\/strong><\/em> would somewhat reverse this plot conceit. As Selick said, \u201cInstead of a child going to this other world with a monstrous mother, it\u2019s a monstrous mother who comes into our world to wreak havoc on a kid\u2019s life.\u201d<br \/><br \/>Selick is currently trying to find a studio to produce his latest proposal. Industry observers suggest that likely candidates might include ShadowMachine or <a href=\"https:\/\/m.imdb.com\/list\/ls022541555\/\">Laika,<\/a> which created <em><strong>Coraline<\/strong><\/em>. <br \/><br \/>The versatile director is also interested in moving forward with <em><strong>The Shadow King<\/strong><\/em>, another of his projects that has been on hold for more than a decade.\u00a0 Back in 2011, Selick had screened two brief sequences of the animation. Reportedly, he may now try to create a graphic novel to promote the concept, which may be offered to another director.<br \/><br \/>Early in his childhood, Selick had been influenced by the stop-motion animation sequences of Lotte Reiniger and Ray Harryhausen. \u201cThose cyclops and dragons and skeletons took a hold of me,\u201d he was quoted as saying. \u201cI knew they were absolutely real, but didn\u2019t know in what universe they\u2019d be brought to life or how that worked.\u201d<br \/><br \/>Selick studied animation at the University of Syracuse and at CalArts. Early on in his career, he worked briefly for at Disney, where his colleagues included Tim Burton and Eric Larson. Disney produced two of Selick&#8217;s early works, <em><strong>The Nightmare Before Christmas<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>James and the Giant Peach<\/strong><\/em>.<br \/><br \/><em><strong>Coraline<\/strong> <\/em>was a huge success, earning more than $131 million globally. It was nominated for an Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, and BAFTAs.
