Soi Cheang\u2019s\u00a0<i>Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In<\/i>, which played at Cannes last month, will make its North American premiere with producer<b>\u00a0John Chong<\/b>\u00a0and actor\u00a0<b>Philip Ng<\/b>\u00a0in attendance for Closing Night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">As part of this panorama, the festival is turning a much-deserved\u00a0<b>FILMMAKER-IN-FOCUS<\/b>\u00a0on Hong Kong auteur\u00a0<b>Ray Yeung<\/b>, showcasing his most transcendent, era-defining\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">LGBTQ+ films, including his 2015 masterwork,\u00a0<i>Front Cover<\/i>, set in the high-fashion world in New York; 2024 Berlin Teddy Award winner\u00a0<i>All Shall Be Well<\/i>, which Yeung will introduce with the luminous lead, Patra Au, and producers Stanley Guingon and Michael Werner; and his 2019 feature\u00a0<i>Twilight\u2019s Kiss (Suk Suk<\/i>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">There will also be a special<b>\u00a0Spotlight on 852 Films<\/b>\u00a0with Hong Kong singer-actor-producer\u00a0<b>Josie Ho<\/b>, who returns to NYAFF to introduce and re-introduce some of her most daring projects, most notably\u00a0<i>Onpaku<\/i>, a surreal, V-cinema-style terror extravaganza from horror meister Shugo Fujii, and Janell Shirtcliff\u2019s unclassifiable 2021 debut\u00a0<i>Habit\u00a0<\/i>(International Version), in a cut never before screened in North America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">This year\u2019s enhanced Thai program,\u00a0<b>THAI TREASURES<\/b>, presented with support from the Thailand Creative Culture Agency (THACCA), is a full-bodied celebration of Thai film culture, boasting six new films and the largest movie delegation ever to attend the festival. The lineup runs a gamut from genre scorchers to beguiling coming-of-age frolics. Highlights include the effervescent\u00a0<i>Not Friends<\/i>, a disarmingly imaginative teen saga from the Thai studio behind\u00a0<i>Bad Genius<\/i>\u00a0(NYAFF 2017), and\u00a0<i>You and Me and Me<\/i>\u00a0(NYAFF 2023), with director<b>\u00a0Atta Hemwadee<\/b>, producer\u00a0<b>Baz Poonpiriya<\/b>\u00a0(director of\u00a0<i>Bad Genius<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>One For the Road<\/i>), and the film\u2019s young stars\u00a0<b>Anthony Buisseret<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Thitiya Jirapornsilp\u00a0<\/b>in person for its North American premiere. She\u2019ll be joined by the\u00a0<b>ACTOR-IN-FOCUS Ananda Everingham<\/b>\u00a0(also appearing for\u00a0<i>Pattaya Heat<\/i>), who stars as a fatalistic lady-killer, and\u00a0<b>Chayanit Chansangavej<\/b>, who makes an unforgettable turn as \u201cthat obscure object of desire.\u201d Everingham resurfaces in the eerie folk horror\u00a0<i>The Cursed Land<\/i>, which mines fertile terrors from Thailand\u2019s ethnic Muslim communities. Its horror auteur\u00a0<b>Panu Aree<\/b>\u00a0and his lead will be on hand to expound on his inspired integration of ethnic representation and supernatural chills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">For more visceral genre highs, the lineup includes\u00a0<i>Pattaya Heat<\/i>, a pastiche of postmodern crime theatrics set in Thailand\u2019s infamous sin city\u2014it\u2019s what you\u2019d get if Tarantino spent quarantine penning a Bangkok flophouse folly.\u00a0<b>Kongkiat Komesiri<\/b>, the genre maestro behind the beloved\u00a0<i>Khun Pan<\/i>\u00a0fantasy franchise, will be in attendance with his latest, WWII zombie actioner\u00a0<i>Operation Undead<\/i>, which reaffirms Thailand\u2019s cinema as captivatingly shapeshifting. And Thai cinema superstar\u00a0<b>Putthipong \u201cBillkin\u201d Assaratanakul<\/b>\u00a0will take the NYAFF stage for the North American premiere of record-breaking film\u00a0<i>How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The\u00a0<b>TAIWAN TRANSCENDENT<\/b>\u00a0section, generously supported by the Taipei Cultural Center of TECO in New York, shows a cinema in full, defiant bloom, irreverent toward binaries of high\/low art, and freely pivoting between profound introspection and mercurial passions. Leading man\u00a0<b>Austin Lin<\/b>\u00a0and acclaimed actress\u00a0<b>Nikki Hsieh<\/b>\u00a0are set to attend with their film\u00a0<i>Suffocating Love<\/i>. On the arthouse end of the Taiwan lineup is the masterful debut of Hwarng Wern-ying,\u00a0<i>Be With Me<\/i>, executive produced by Hou Hsiao-Hsien. Leading the charge is this edition\u2019s Centerpiece Presentation,\u00a0<i>The Killers<\/i>, an anthologized hit man odyssey destined for cult fame. The film heralds Kim as a major new voice in Korean cinema. Equally original (but a lot more unsettling) is Yoon Eun-Kyung\u2019s\u00a0<i>The Tenants<\/i>, a monochromatic nightmare about bathroom and attic squatters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">A trio of the year\u2019s most popular Korean films\u2014<i>12:12: The Day<\/i>,\u00a0<i>The Roundup: Punishment<\/i>, and\u00a0<i>Exhuma<\/i>\u2014will be showcased at the brand-new building of the Korean Cultural Center New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The films of this year\u2019s\u00a0<b>JAPANORAMA<\/b>, partially supported by the Japan Foundation, range from the sumptuous nostalgia of period pieces to the neon-soaked, karaoke-fueled underbelly of crooning yakuza, all tied together with a generous helping of VFX sorcery and the odd cross-border romance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?s=Kento+Yamazaki\"><b><span lang=\"EN\">Kento Yamazaki<\/span><\/b><\/a><span lang=\"EN\">, the festival\u2019s\u00a0<b>Best from the East<\/b>\u00a0honoree and the undisputed king of the Japanese screen, delivers a tour de force of regal charisma and smoldering intensity in the latest chapter of the\u00a0<i>Kingdom<\/i>\u00a0franchise,\u00a0<i>Kingdom: Return of the Great General<\/i>. Other highlights include\u00a0<i>90 Years Old \u2013 So What?<\/i>, a hilarious, life-affirming dramedy based on the irrepressible spirit of award-winning author Aiko Sato;\u00a0<i>Brush of the God<\/i>\u00a0by 88-year-old legendary stuntman Keizo Murase; and\u00a0<i>Bushido<\/i>, with NYAFF stalwart Kazuya Shiraishi going full samurai with star Tsuyoshi Kusanagi as the ronin protagonist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">A real gem in the lineup is Shimako Sato\u2019s\u00a0<i>Yin Yang Master Zero<\/i>, the first-ever big-budget fantasy directed by a Japanese woman. Starring Kento Yamazaki and Shota Sometani, and featuring sumptuous visual effects from Shirogumi (the Oscar-winning team behind\u00a0<i>Godzilla Minus One<\/i>, led by Sato\u2019s husband, Takashi Yamazaki), this is a film that doesn\u2019t just push boundaries\u2014it obliterates them.
