New York, NY (June 13, 2024)<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u2013 The\u00a0<\/span>New York Asian Film Foundation<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Film at Lincoln Center<\/a><\/span>\u00a0announce the 23rd edition of the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), running July 12\u201322 at Film at Lincoln Center, with additional screenings from July 22\u201328 at the SVA Theatre and July 13\u201315, 18\u201321, and 23\u201325 at LOOK Cinemas W57, plus a special collaborative presentation of films at the Korean Cultural Center New York.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor so many, Asian films start and end with\u00a0Parasite\u00a0<\/i>or\u00a0Everything Everywhere All At Once\u00a0<\/i>(who could blame them?), but the real action is happening in the trenches of Asian cinema, where audacious auteurs and daring debutantes are unleashing a tidal wave of talent that\u2019s about to crash on American shores,\u201d said Samuel Jamier, festival director and president of the New York Asian Film Foundation. \u201cThis year\u2019s festival is like sriracha sauce\u2014it\u2019s spicy, it\u2019s tangy, it\u2019s got a kick that\u2019ll wake up your senses. And it\u2019s hard to find right now! We\u2019ve got more fresh faces than a K-pop band. It\u2019s a blockbuster year for us, and we can\u2019t wait to share these passionate stories with equally passionate audiences in the city that never sleeps\u2014although they might want to catch a nap before our late-night screenings! The festival will host the premieres of\u00a0<\/b>20 feature debuts, its largest lineup of newcomers ever, and features an amplified number of films focusing on LGBTQ+ characters and themes, including several that represent touchpoints in queer cinema.<\/p>\n

Opening Night is the July 12 world premiere of\u00a0Park Beom-su<\/b>\u2019s\u00a0Victory<\/i>, a cheerleading epic that\u2019s like\u00a0Bring It On\u00a0<\/i>meets\u00a0Parasite<\/i>, with a dash of\u00a0Teen Spirit<\/i>.\u00a0Screen International\u00a0<\/i>Rising Star Asia honoree Lee Hye-ri<\/b>\u00a0(of 3rd-gen K-pop band Girl\u2019s Day) will be on hand alongside her co-star\u00a0Park Se-wan<\/b>\u00a0(of\u00a0Life Is Beautiful<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a06\/45<\/i>) and director Park.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/ins>\n

Hong Kong has always been the beating heart of NYAFF, and this year\u2019s\u00a0HONG KONG PANORAMA<\/b>, co-presented and backed by the generous support of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York (HKETONY), is a testament to Hong Kong\u2019s unparalleled cinematic legacy, showcasing a broad array of films that exemplify its unique blend of artistry, innovation, and sheer entertainment value. A star-studded lineup of Hong Kong luminaries will be in attendance, including living legend\u00a0Tai Bo<\/b>, who will be honored with this year\u2019s\u00a0Star Asia Lifetime Achievement Award<\/b>; director\u00a0Ho Miu-ki<\/b>\u00a0of\u00a0Love Lies<\/i>; the creative trio of director\u00a0Chow Kam Wing<\/b>, screenwriter\u00a0Lam Tsz Ki<\/b>, and actress\u00a0Kuku So<\/b>, who will appear for the world premiere of\u00a0For Alice<\/i>; the multi-hyphenate talent\u00a0Sasha Chuk<\/b>, who will be present for the North American Premiere of\u00a0Fly Me to the Moon<\/i>; and the charismatic\u00a0Angus Yeung<\/b>, who hits the ground running as an action star with\u00a0Inexternal<\/i>, whose world premiere is proof that the Hong Kong martial arts movie tradition is alive and kicking. Soi Cheang\u2019s\u00a0Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In<\/i>, which played at Cannes last month, will make its North American premiere with producer\u00a0John Chong<\/b>\u00a0and actor\u00a0Philip Ng<\/b>\u00a0in attendance for Closing Night.<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of this panorama, the festival is turning a much-deserved\u00a0FILMMAKER-IN-FOCUS<\/b>\u00a0on Hong Kong auteur\u00a0Ray Yeung<\/b>, showcasing his most transcendent, era-defining\u00a0<\/span>LGBTQ+ films, including his 2015 masterwork,\u00a0Front Cover<\/i>, set in the high-fashion world in New York; 2024 Berlin Teddy Award winner\u00a0All Shall Be Well<\/i>, which Yeung will introduce with the luminous lead, Patra Au, and producers Stanley Guingon and Michael Werner; and his 2019 feature\u00a0Twilight\u2019s Kiss (Suk Suk<\/i>).<\/span><\/p>\n

There will also be a special\u00a0Spotlight on 852 Films<\/b>\u00a0with Hong Kong singer-actor-producer\u00a0Josie Ho<\/b>, who returns to NYAFF to introduce and re-introduce some of her most daring projects, most notably\u00a0Onpaku<\/i>, a surreal, V-cinema-style terror extravaganza from horror meister Shugo Fujii, and Janell Shirtcliff\u2019s unclassifiable 2021 debut\u00a0Habit\u00a0<\/i>(International Version), in a cut never before screened in North America.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s enhanced Thai program,\u00a0THAI TREASURES<\/b>, presented with support from the Thailand Creative Culture Agency (THACCA), is a full-bodied celebration of Thai film culture, boasting six new films and the largest movie delegation ever to attend the festival. The lineup runs a gamut from genre scorchers to beguiling coming-of-age frolics. Highlights include the effervescent\u00a0Not Friends<\/i>, a disarmingly imaginative teen saga from the Thai studio behind\u00a0Bad Genius<\/i>\u00a0(NYAFF 2017), and\u00a0You and Me and Me<\/i>\u00a0(NYAFF 2023), with director\u00a0Atta Hemwadee<\/b>, producer\u00a0Baz Poonpiriya<\/b>\u00a0(director of\u00a0Bad Genius<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0One For the Road<\/i>), and the film\u2019s young stars\u00a0Anthony Buisseret<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Thitiya Jirapornsilp\u00a0<\/b>in person for its North American premiere. At the other end of the tonal spectrum is\u00a0Supposed<\/i>, the haunting final film from the late Thanakorn Pongsuwan, who\u2019ll be honored posthumously by his producer\u00a0Siwaporn Pongsuwan<\/b>\u00a0in attendance. She\u2019ll be joined by the\u00a0ACTOR-IN-FOCUS Ananda Everingham<\/b>\u00a0(also appearing for\u00a0Pattaya Heat<\/i>), who stars as a fatalistic lady-killer, and\u00a0Chayanit Chansangavej<\/b>, who makes an unforgettable turn as \u201cthat obscure object of desire.\u201d Everingham resurfaces in the eerie folk horror\u00a0The Cursed Land<\/i>, which mines fertile terrors from Thailand\u2019s ethnic Muslim communities. Its horror auteur\u00a0Panu Aree<\/b>\u00a0and his lead will be on hand to expound on his inspired integration of ethnic representation and supernatural chills.<\/span><\/p>\n

For more visceral genre highs, the lineup includes\u00a0Pattaya Heat<\/i>, a pastiche of postmodern crime theatrics set in Thailand\u2019s infamous sin city\u2014it\u2019s what you\u2019d get if Tarantino spent quarantine penning a Bangkok flophouse folly.\u00a0Kongkiat Komesiri<\/b>, the genre maestro behind the beloved\u00a0Khun Pan<\/i>\u00a0fantasy franchise, will be in attendance with his latest, WWII zombie actioner\u00a0Operation Undead<\/i>, which reaffirms Thailand\u2019s cinema as captivatingly shapeshifting. And Thai cinema superstar\u00a0Putthipong \u201cBillkin\u201d Assaratanakul<\/b>\u00a0will take the NYAFF stage for the North American premiere of record-breaking film\u00a0How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0TAIWAN TRANSCENDENT<\/b>\u00a0section, generously supported by the Taipei Cultural Center of TECO in New York, shows a cinema in full, defiant bloom, irreverent toward binaries of high\/low art, and freely pivoting between profound introspection and mercurial passions. Leading man\u00a0Austin Lin<\/b>\u00a0and acclaimed actress\u00a0Nikki Hsieh<\/b>\u00a0are set to attend with their film\u00a0Suffocating Love<\/i>. On the arthouse end of the Taiwan lineup is the masterful debut of Hwarng Wern-ying,\u00a0Be With Me<\/i>, executive produced by Hou Hsiao-Hsien. The turbocharged, star-studded action\/comedy\u00a0Breaking and Re-entering<\/i>\u00a0brings wunderkind director\u00a0Leo Wang<\/b>\u00a0and star\u00a0Kent Tsai\u00a0<\/b>to the festival in person, and Hsiao Ya-Chuan\u2019s\u00a0Old Fox<\/i>\u00a0is a stark yet lyrical morality tale set against the social upheavals of Taiwan\u2019s economic boom years.<\/span><\/p>\n

A two-film sampling of Taiwan\u2019s cinematic intoxicant of choice\u2014the \u201cBoys Love\u201d rom-com renaissance\u2014includes\u00a0The Time of Huan Nan<\/i>, a coming-of-age tale that perceptively probes the eternal tangles of yearnings and societal repression, and\u00a0A Balloon\u2019s Landing<\/i>, director Angel Teng\u2019s metaphysical charmer starring Hong Kong heartthrob Terrance Lau and Taiwan\u2019s Fandy Fan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other notable films include\u00a0Salli<\/i>, directed by Chien-Hung Lien, featuring Esther Liu as a sexy, sassy chicken farmer, and the captivating Japan-Taiwan coproduction\u00a018×2 Beyond Youthful Days<\/i>, starring Hsu Kuang-han (also known as Greg Hsu, of\u00a0Marry My Dead Body<\/i>\u00a0fame, NYAFF 2023).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/ins>\n

Co-presented with Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY),\u00a0KOREAN FRONTLINES<\/b>\u00a0serves as a potent reminder of why Korea remains the undisputed king of the cinematic shock to the system. Leading the charge is this edition\u2019s Centerpiece Presentation,\u00a0The Killers<\/i>, an anthologized hit man odyssey destined for cult fame. This world premiere presentation brings together a group of visionary directors\u2014all NYAFF alumni\u2014including\u00a0Chang Hang-jun<\/b>,\u00a0Kim Jong-kwan<\/b>,\u00a0Lee Myung-Se<\/b>, and\u00a0Roh Deok<\/b>, along with incandescent actress\u00a0Shim Eun-kyung<\/b>\u00a0(Miss Granny<\/i>,\u00a0Sunny<\/i>).<\/p>\n

Another standout is\u00a0The Guest<\/i>, a film whose deceptively benign title masks a tense, uber-creepy thriller, with director\u00a0Yeon Je-gwang<\/b>\u00a0and lead actor\u00a0Lee Ju-seung<\/b>\u00a0in attendance.\u00a0Kim Da-min<\/b>\u00a0will attend the North American premiere of her wonderfully off-kilter feature debut\u00a0FAQ<\/i>, a whimsical fantasy centering on an exceptionally smart little girl who befriends a bottle of clairvoyant\u00a0makgeolli\u00a0<\/i>(rice wine). The film heralds Kim as a major new voice in Korean cinema. Equally original (but a lot more unsettling) is Yoon Eun-Kyung\u2019s\u00a0The Tenants<\/i>, a monochromatic nightmare about bathroom and attic squatters.<\/span><\/p>\n

A trio of the year\u2019s most popular Korean films\u201412:12: The Day<\/i>,\u00a0The Roundup: Punishment<\/i>, and\u00a0Exhuma<\/i>\u2014will be showcased at the brand-new building of the Korean Cultural Center New York.<\/span><\/p>\n

The films of this year\u2019s\u00a0JAPANORAMA<\/b>, partially supported by the Japan Foundation, range from the sumptuous nostalgia of period pieces to the neon-soaked, karaoke-fueled underbelly of crooning yakuza, all tied together with a generous helping of VFX sorcery and the odd cross-border romance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kento Yamazaki<\/span><\/b><\/a>, the festival\u2019s\u00a0Best from the East<\/b>\u00a0honoree and the undisputed king of the Japanese screen, delivers a tour de force of regal charisma and smoldering intensity in the latest chapter of the\u00a0Kingdom<\/i>\u00a0franchise,\u00a0Kingdom: Return of the Great General<\/i>. Other highlights include\u00a090 Years Old \u2013 So What?<\/i>, a hilarious, life-affirming dramedy based on the irrepressible spirit of award-winning author Aiko Sato;\u00a0Brush of the God<\/i>\u00a0by 88-year-old legendary stuntman Keizo Murase; and\u00a0Bushido<\/i>, with NYAFF stalwart Kazuya Shiraishi going full samurai with star Tsuyoshi Kusanagi as the ronin protagonist.<\/span><\/p>\n

A real gem in the lineup is Shimako Sato\u2019s\u00a0Yin Yang Master Zero<\/i>, the first-ever big-budget fantasy directed by a Japanese woman. Starring Kento Yamazaki and Shota Sometani, and featuring sumptuous visual effects from Shirogumi (the Oscar-winning team behind\u00a0Godzilla Minus One<\/i>, led by Sato\u2019s husband, Takashi Yamazaki), this is a film that doesn\u2019t just push boundaries\u2014it obliterates them. It\u2019s a stunning showcase of what\u2019s possible when you put a woman at the helm of a blockbuster production.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nobuhiro Yamashita\u2019s (Linda Linda Linda<\/i>)\u00a0Let\u2019s Go Karaoke!<\/i>\u00a0delivers a little musical madness, while Shusuke Kaneko\u2019s pitch-black mystery-thriller\u00a0Gold Boy<\/i>\u00a0proves that even the darkest of tales can shine brightly.<\/span><\/p>\n

A second wave of NYAFF announcements will be made next week, highlighting the\u00a0Uncaged Competition\u00a0<\/b>lineup and jury members, the\u00a0Shorts Showcase Competition<\/b>\u00a0lineup and jury members, exciting new titles, special guests and award honorees, master classes and panels, and other unmissable events. NYAFF is also thrilled to host the\u00a0Opening Night Market<\/b>\u00a0on July 12 and the\u00a0Matsuri Night<\/b>\u00a0on July 23, both with live music and Asian food stalls, as well as other parties and receptions.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was called \u201cthe best film festival in New York\u201d by\u00a0The Village Voice<\/i>\u00a0and \u201carguably the world\u2019s best-curated program of new and classic Asian cinema\u201d by\u00a0IndieWire<\/i>. Launched in 2002, the festival showcases a wildly diverse lineup of singular titles each year, ranging from mainstream blockbusters and art-house eccentricities to genre and cult classics. It was the first North American film festival to champion the works of Johnnie To, Bong Joon Ho, Park Chan-wook, Takashi Miike, and other auteurs of contemporary Asian cinema. Notable festival guests have included Lee Byung-hun, Ryoo Seung-wan, Masami Nagasawa, Sammo Hung, Lee Jung-jae, and Jackie Chan. Since 2010, NYAFF has been produced in collaboration with Film at Lincoln Center.<\/p>\n

NEW YORK ASIAN FILM FOUNDATION
\n<\/b><\/span><\/u>The New York Asian Film Foundation Inc. is America\u2019s premier 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the exhibition and appreciation of Asian film culture in all its forms, with year-round festivals and programs, and a view to building bridges between Asia and America.<\/p>\n

The New York Asian Film Foundation\u2019s flagship event is the annual New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), which has been presented in collaboration with Film at Lincoln Center since 2010. Now celebrating its 22nd year, NYAFF is North America\u2019s leading festival of Asian cinema.<\/span><\/p>\n

The foundation\u2019s other events and initiatives include special screening events and an annual Winter Showcase at the SVA Theatre.<\/span><\/p>\n
