A new documentary about the making of The Shining<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, which is certified by the Stanley Kubrick Film Archive and family estate, is set to released later this month. The feature is titled Shine On – The Forgotten ‘Shining’ Location<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

The movie chronicles the process of location scouting and creating the art direction for the fictional Overlook Hotel, IndieWire<\/a> is reporting. The Shining<\/em><\/strong> is set in the remote hotel, which is said to be situated in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, The building’s interior was created as an elaborate set on sound stages at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, England<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Welsh actor Michael Sheen serves as the narrator for Shine On<\/em><\/strong>. The documentary also includes interviews with The Shining<\/em><\/strong> executive producer Jan Harlan and art director Les Tomkins. Kubrick’s daughter, Katharina Kubrick, who worked as a location researcher on the film, also provided an interview for the upcoming project.<\/p>\n

The feature’s official synopsis states that the interviewees will “revisit the studio locations and share their memories about a film frequently voted the best horror film of all time.”<\/p>\n

All the Overlook Hotel’s sets that were included in the psychological horror film, which was released almost 45 years ago, were previously thought to have been destroyed. The documentary’s interviewees visited Elstree Studios to visit the sets that still do remain, and talk about the feaure’s location scouting and art direction<\/p>\n

“There have been so many rumors about some of the sets from The Shining<\/strong><\/em> still existing at Elstree Studios, but to actually find them and walk around them was like discovering a holy grail of film history,” Shine On<\/em><\/strong>‘s director and producer, Paul King, said in a press statement.<\/p>\n

Katharina Kubrick added, \u201cThe production of The Shining<\/strong><\/em> has been well documented and analyzed, but this is a story which has never been told. Pivotal scenes from the film took place in these areas, so going back to them felt like stepping into the movie itself.”<\/p>\n

Shine On<\/strong><\/em> was made in conjunction with the Stanley Kubrick Film Archive, Elstree Studios, UAL and the Kubrick family. The project is the latest documentary to have been made about The Shining<\/em><\/strong>; the other documentaries include helmer Rodney Ascher’s 2012 feature, Room 237<\/em><\/strong>, and Vivian Kubrick’s BBC project, The Making of ‘The Shining<\/strong><\/em>.‘<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The latter movie also chronicles the stressful experience that actress Shelley Duvall had endured during the filming of The Shining<\/strong><\/em>. The Emmy-nominated performer, who died on July 11 at age 75, long expressed the challenges she endure during the shoot. She often clashed with Kubrick, who co-wrote, directed and produced the drama, during the filmmaking process.<\/p>\n

Duvall, who played Wendy Torrance in The Shining<\/strong><\/em>, discussed her experience working with Kubrick on the project during a 2001 interview<\/a>. “For a person so charming and so likable – indeed lovable – he can do some pretty cruel things when you’re filming. Because it seemed to me, at times, that the end justified the means.”<\/p>\n

The actress added: “I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. Why? Because of Stanley, and it was a fascinating learning experience. It was such intense work that I think it makes you smarter. But I wouldn’t want to go through it again.”<\/p>\n

The Kubrick estate has also approved other expansions of the auteur’s filmography. It announced last year that it will be adapting his 1964 political satire movie, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb<\/em><\/strong>, for the West End.<\/p>\n

Veep<\/strong><\/em> and Avenue 5<\/strong><\/em> creator Armando Iannucci will helm the first-ever adaptation of a Kubrick film for the theater. The latter’s widow, Christiane Kubrick confirmed the news that the upcoming play will be based on the black comedy film, which starred Peter Sellers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Besides Duvall, The Shining<\/em><\/strong> also stars Jack Nicholson, Danny Lloyd and Scatman Crothers. Nicholson played Wendy’s husband, Jack Torrance, a writer and recovering alcoholic. He accepts a new position as the off-season caretaker of the Overlook Hotel. Lloyd portrayed the couple’s young son Danny, who possesses the titular psychic abilities.
\n<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Kubrick directed and produced the movie. He also co-wrote the script with Diane Johnson. The duo based the screenplay on Stephen King’s 1977 horror novel of the same name. Kubrick adapted the book after he was nominated for the Best Director and Best Screenplay Oscars for his previous movies, 2001: A Space Odyssey<\/strong><\/em> and A Clockwork Orange<\/i><\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Shine On<\/em> <\/strong>will premiere on Kubrick’s official YouTube channel<\/a> on Friday, July 26 at 11 a.m. PST\/2 p.m. EST. The feature’s release will commemorate what would have been the late filmmaker’s 96th birthday. A trailer for the film will debut tomorrow, Friday, July 19.<\/p>\n
