The script, which Scorsese is coauthoring with critic and filmmaker Kent Jones, is based on the 1973 novel by Japanese author Sh\u016bsaku End\u014d, who died in 1996. Scorsese and Garfield had earlier worked together on a film based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0490215\/\"><em><strong>Silence<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, another of End\u014d\u2019s novels.<br \/><br \/>According to press reports, <em><strong>A<\/strong><strong> Life of Jesus<\/strong><\/em> will be a short film, perhaps 80 minutes or so, and set in the present day. Scorsese had earlier stated that his treatment would emphasize \u201cJesus\u2019s core teachings in a way that explores the principles but doesn\u2019t proselytize.\u201d<br \/><br \/>Scorsese declared that the film will be neither a \u201cstraight narrative\u201d nor a \u201cdocumentary\u201d but a unique production that will try to make the story of Jesus Christ \u201cmore accessible\u201d while removing \u201cthe negative onus of what has been associated with organized religion.\u201d<br \/><br \/>In a recent interview with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/awards\/story\/2024-01-08\/martin-scorsese-killers-of-the-flower-moon-new-jesus-film\"><em><strong>Los Angeles Times<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, Scorsese was quoted as saying: \u201cRight now, \u2018religion,\u2019 you say that word and everyone is up in arms because it\u2019s failed in so many ways. But that doesn\u2019t mean necessarily that the initial impulse was wrong. Let\u2019s get back. Let\u2019s just think about it. You may reject it. But it might make a difference in how you live your life \u2014 even in rejecting it. Don\u2019t dismiss it offhand. That\u2019s all I\u2019m talking about. And I\u2019m saying that as a person who\u2019s going to be 81 in a couple of days.\u201d<br \/><br \/>The octogenarian director is still basking in the critical acclaim earned by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt5537002\/\"><em><strong>Killers of the Flower Moon<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, which earned ten Oscar nominations, including one for Best Director. (Scorsese is the oldest director to have been nominated for that prize.)<br \/><br \/>Production on <em><strong>A<\/strong><strong> Life of Jesus<\/strong><\/em> is expected to begin in October in Italy, Egypt, and Israel. Scorsese, who is independently financing the film, has most recently been shooting a documentary about ancient shipwrecks in Sicily. Two years ago, he had announced plans to make a movie for Apple Original Films based on David Grann\u2019s nonfiction book <em>The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder<\/em>.
