SPELLBOUND – Skydance Animation\/Netflix \u00a9 2024<\/p>\n

Every kid has trouble getting along with their parents sometimes, but this is ridiculous. In the new animated adventure\u00a0Spellbound<\/span><\/a>, Ellian (voiced by Rachel Zegler<\/a>) squares off with her mother and father, the king and queen of Lumbria. This isn\u2019t your typical family drama \u2014 a mysterious spell has transformed Ellian\u2019s parents into massive, rampaging, well,\u00a0monsters. You can check out a new trailer for the upcoming film above.<\/p>\n

Beneath the magic and mayhem,\u00a0Spellbound<\/strong> is a human story, a brand-new one that uses fantastical elements to tell an all too relatable tale, according to director Vicky Jenson (Shrek): \u201cIf we start with the familiar \u2014 the kingdom, a princess, a king, a queen, and a spell \u2014 we could use that to express the story of this family,\u201d she told Netflix.<\/p>\n

Jenson said, \u201cFor me, the story is even more universal than the specifics of this family dynamic. For me, it speaks to kids and their parents, to the kind of alienation that can happen as we grow up, and the steps we have to make toward each other to weather it together and come through the other side with better understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Ellian hits the road to try to break the spell on her parents, don\u2019t be too surprised if you see a few things in Lumbria that you find recognizable along the way. The film\u2019s new trailer showcases a few of those similarities to our world, from a rideshare, uh, frog (who receives five literal stars) to a \u201cwand\u201d that functions like a car-key fob. \u201cFinding the allegory, finding the fairy-tale paradigm, the shape of it, I think is what was a real breakthrough for us,\u201d Jenson said.<\/p>\n

Of course, you can\u2019t create a fairy tale without a royal cast. \u201cTaking on this job was so cool for my inner child,\u201d Zegler (West Side Story<\/strong>) tells Tudum. \u201cI was obsessed with so many animated films as a child, including Beauty and the Beast, which had such a gorgeous, sweeping score by Alan Menken, who did the music for our film \u2026 Films like these made me fall in love with musical theater, which ended up changing my life entirely.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe can belt with the best of them, but really there\u2019s that same vulnerability, and groundedness, and humanity to her voice as well,\u201d Jenson said. \u201cShe\u2019s just amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

At first, Ellian\u2019s parents don\u2019t talk much at first in their monstrous forms, but when they do, they\u2019re voiced by Oscar winners: Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem. \u201cNicole\u2019s the biggest actress there is. She\u2019s super in demand,\u201d Jenson said. \u201cBut then, when she saw it, even [on a] laptop, she goes, \u2018Oh, I love it. I want to be a part of this.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Bardem had his own journey to\u00a0Spellbound<\/strong>. \u201cHe just would come straight from the set of\u00a0Dune: Part Two<\/strong>,\u201d Jenson said. \u201cHe\u2019s like, \u2018I apologize, I\u2019ve been wearing a rubber suit all day.\u2019 \u201d Bardem channeled his hot days into a not-so-kingly sound: \u201cA lot of the animal noises, some of the monster dad sounds, he definitely created,\u201d Jenson added. \u201cHe played around with wolf growls and stuff and incorporated that into his laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Zegler, it was \u201ca dream come true\u201d to appear in an animated film. \u201cIt\u2019s really different to perform an entire movie from a recording booth \u2014 you have to capture every aspect of an emotional performance from behind a mic, and no one will be able to see your face at the end of the day,\u201d she said. \u201cYou place your performance into the hands of many talented animators who totally take it to the next level.\u201d<\/p>\n

Together, Zegler, Bardem, and Kidman make up the central trio of\u00a0Spellbound, a fairy-tale family with very modern problems. They\u2019re joined by John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, Nathan Lane, and Tituss Burgess. \u201cAnd Flink is our constant flash of purple throughout,\u201d Jenson added. (Flink is a tiny little furry sidekick who follows Ellian everywhere.)<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s not all: The film also features music and lyrics from luminaries Menken (Beauty and the Beast<\/strong>) and Glenn Slater (Tangled<\/strong>). \u201cWe did a music retreat very early on when we hit on our initial fairy-tale idea,\u201d Jenson said. \u201cAnd we had a keyboard there for Alan, and we were just weeping with the first melody.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zegler hopes that \u201caudiences will see how incredible the art of animation is when it comes to teaching tough lessons to the next generation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spellbound<\/strong>, explained Zegler, \u201chandles delicate subjects with a lot of beautiful imagery, music, and an allegorical approach to real-life issues that kids sometimes face.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spellbound<\/strong> is coming to Netflix on Nov. 22.<\/p>\n
