The Cannes Film Festival has announced its full lineup of movies that are scheduled to play during its upcoming 74th edition, which will be held in-person in France between July 6-17. The lineup was unveiled by Pierre Lescure, the president, and Thierry Fr\u00e9maux, the general delegate, of the festival earlier today from the UGC Normandie theater in Paris.<\/p>\n

The festival is set to open with the world premiere of the musical drama, Annette<\/em><\/strong>, which was co-written and directed by French director, Leos Carax. The film stars Academy Award-winning French actress, Marion Cotillard and two-time Oscar-nominated actor, Adam Driver. The movie follows a singer and a stand-up comedian whose lives are changed by the birth of their first child. L.A. rock-pop duo, Sparks, which is comprised of brothers Ron and Russell Mael, co-wrote the script with Carax, and are also composed the film\u2019s soundtrack.<\/p>\n

One of the most anticipated features that is set to premiere at the festival is the thriller, Flag Day<\/em><\/strong>, which was directed by Sean Penn. The two-time Academy Award-winner’s latest film landed a prime slot at Cannes. In addition to the helmer, the drama also stars Katheryn Winnick, Miles Teller, Eddie Marsan and Josh Brolin.<\/p>\n

Writer-director-producer, Sean Baker, who garnered attention for his Oscar-nominated 2017 drama, The Florida Project<\/strong><\/em>, is set to premiere his new comedy-drama, Red Rocket<\/em><\/strong>, in the Cannes competition. Assassin’s Creed<\/strong><\/em> helmer, Justin Kurzel is returning to the big screen with his thriller, Nitram<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Several filmmakers who have previously garnered attention at Cannes in previous years will be returning to the festival. Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul won the highest prize awarded at the festival, the Palme d\u2019Or, in 2010 for his art drama, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives<\/em><\/strong>. He’s returning to the Cannes competitive lineup with the drama, Memoria<\/em><\/strong>, which stars Tilda Swinton.<\/p>\n

Finnish helmer Juho Kuosmanen, who won the Un Certain Regard award at the festival for his drama, The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli M\u00e4k<\/em><\/strong>i, in 2016, is returning to Cannes competition this year with Compartment No. 6<\/em><\/strong>. The drama is set on the night train from Moscow to Murmansk.<\/p>\n

The festival has also announced that it will launch a new section during this year’s edition, titled Cannes Premiere.<\/p>\n

The section will feature work from several high-profile directors, including the documentary, Cow<\/em><\/strong>, from Andrea Arnold; the documentary, JFK Revisited: Through The Looking Glass, <\/em><\/strong>from Academy Award-winner, Oliver Stone; and Jane Par Charlotte<\/em><\/strong>, the directorial debut of acclaimed French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg.<\/p>\n

This year’s Un Certain Regard section will include films from several other first-time filmmakers.<\/p>\n

Those directors include Laura Wandel’s drama, Un Monde<\/em><\/strong>, Gessica G\u00e9n\u00e9us’ Freda<\/em><\/strong> and C.B Yi’s drama, Moneyboys<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Several high-profile titles that were originally scheduled to premiere at Cannes last year, which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be screening at the festival this year. They include Oscar-nominated writer-director Wes Anderson’s ensemble comedy-drama, The French Dispatch<\/em><\/strong>, and fellow Academy Award-nominated scribe-helmer, Paul Verhoeven’s nun drama, Benedetta<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Cannes has also made headlines for selecting Oscar-winning writer-director, Spike Lee to lead the international jury that hands out the Palme d\u2019Or and other official festival awards. He’s taking over the job this year after he was set to fill the role for last year’s festival before it was canceled.<\/p>\n

Two-time Academy Award-winning actress, Jodie Foster<\/a> is also set to attend Cannes. She’ll be in France for the festival’s opening ceremony on July 6 , where she’ll receive the lifetime achievement Palme d\u2019Or.<\/p>\n
