The film, which also wrote the screenplay, premiered at this year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?s=Cannes+Film+Festival\">Cannes Film Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The synopsis reads: The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), the mayor\u2019s daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Besides Driver,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>the film also stars Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Kathryn Hunter, and Dustin Hoffman. Producers on the film are Barry Hirsch, Fred Roos, and Michael Bederman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe seeds for\u00a0<strong><i>Megalopolis<\/i><\/strong>\u00a0were planted when as a kid I saw H.G. Wells\u2019s\u00a0<i>Things to Come,<\/i>\u201d Coppola said to Vanity Fair, \u201cThis 1930s\u00a0Korda\u00a0classic is about building the world of tomorrow, and has always been with me, first as the \u2018boy scientist\u2019 I was and later as a filmmaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1774669342741533\" data-ad-slot=\"1211148813\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\n<p>In his statement to <i>Vanity Fair,<\/i> the director also addresses rumors about the long gestation of <i><strong>Megalopolis<\/strong>.<\/i> To maintain total control of the project, he sold part of his winery estate in Northern California to self-finance the $120 million budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The film was self-financed by Coppola, as has been widely reported, and it is his first feature since <strong>Twixt<\/strong> in 2011.
