News of the firings was first published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/francis-ford-coppolas-megalopolis-in-peril-1235284875\/\"><em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a> in January of 2023.<br \/><br \/>In a just-published interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/news\/megalopolis-francis-ford-coppola-cant-put-a-label-exclusive\/\"><em><strong>Empire<\/strong><\/em>,<\/a> the iconic auteur offered his own explanation of the incident. Speaking of his interactions with production designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1155885\/\">Beth Mickle<\/a>, Coppola was quoted as saying: \u201c<em><strong>Megalopolis<\/strong> <\/em>had a big art-department need because you have to show the world of the future. Ultimately, [Beth and I] really didn\u2019t share the same vision. We [later] disagreed to a degree that it was decided that the best thing would be if I hired a concept artist and came up with frames that showed what I wanted, which I did.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>Coppola added that the art department was frustrated because they felt he was usurping their role in creating the visual look of the film, saying they wanted to do \u201cgiant sets and images\u201d while he was focusing more on costumes and design.<br \/><br \/>According to Coppola, his approach would have helped reduce costs for the extravagant production, which were approaching $148 million. When he suggested firing one of the five art directors as a cost-cutting measure, all of them resigned in protest.<br \/><br \/>In his<a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/news\/megalopolis-francis-ford-coppola-cant-put-a-label-exclusive\/\"> <em><strong>Empire<\/strong> <\/em><\/a>interview, Coppola justified his decision by declaring, \u201cI said, \u2018Let\u2019s face it, I\u2019m the only one who knows what the director has in mind. I don\u2019t care what you think.\u2019 Also, I\u2019m not only the director \u2014 I was also putting up the money. So, to be told that I had to have a huge art department that I didn\u2019t want was absurd to me.\u201d<br \/><br \/>Megalopolis was self-financed by Coppola, who sold off his wineries to make the film.<br \/>Reflecting on his repertoire of other iconic films that included <em><strong>Apocalypse Now<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>The Godfather<\/strong><\/em>, and <em><strong>The Conversation<\/strong><\/em>, Coppola justified his own artistic vision by adding, \u201cArtists are the ones who shed light on our human condition. That\u2019s why artists are necessary. We give them a chance to illuminate contemporary life. The film leaps into the unknown unafraid.
