{"id":26096,"date":"2024-09-17T14:25:04","date_gmt":"2024-09-17T18:25:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=26096"},"modified":"2024-09-17T14:25:04","modified_gmt":"2024-09-17T18:25:04","slug":"rosalind-chao-says-the-joy-luck-club-sequel-is-under-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=26096","title":{"rendered":"Rosalind Chao Says &#8216;The Joy Luck Club&#8217; Sequel Is Under Development"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Photo by Hollywood Pictures &#8211; \u00a9\u00a01993<\/p>\r\n<p>The much-anticipated sequel to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0107282\/\"><em><strong>The Joy Luck Club<\/strong><\/em><\/a> is moving forward, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001034\/\">Rosalind Chao<\/a>, who starred in the original 1993 film, playing the role of Rose Hsu Jordan. <br \/>Chao was quoted in <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/09\/joy-luck-club-sequel-rosalind-chao-1236089717\/\"><em>Deadline<\/em><\/a> this week as saying that she\u2019s planning to meet with other cast members via Zoom to discuss the project.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a script,\u201d she told reporters. \u201cI cried when I read the script.\u201d<br \/><br \/>The upcoming sequel is being written by Oscar winner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0060103\/\">Ron Bass<\/a> in cooperation with Amy Tan, author of the bestselling novel that inspired the 1993 film directed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0911061\/\">Wayne Wang<\/a>. That movie was acclaimed as a touching multigenerational portrait of four Chinese-born women and their Chinese-American daughters. Joining Chao in the cast were Tsai Chin, Kieu Chinn, Lisa Lu, France Nuyen, Lauren Tom, Tamlyn Tomita, and Ming-Na Wen.<\/p>\r\n<p><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1774669342741533\" data-ad-slot=\"1211148813\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins><br \/><br \/>According to the official synopsis for the sequel now in development, \u201cthe mothers become grandmothers and the daughters become mothers in their own right, introducing a new generation exploring their own relationships with culture, heritage, love, womanhood, and identity.\u201d<br \/><br \/>With Oliver Stone as executive producer of the 1993 film, <em><strong>The Joy Luck Club<\/strong><\/em> was released by Disney Touchstone and grossed nearly $33 million domestically. It is regarded as a harbinger of other popular films with Asian casts and themes, including <em><strong>Crazy Rich Asians<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings<\/strong><\/em>.<br \/><br \/>The 66-year old Chao starred recently on the Netflix series <em><strong>3 Body Problem<\/strong><\/em>, playing the role of Ye Wenjie. Chao came to prominence in the 1980s when she played the role of Soon-Lee Klinger in <em><strong>AfterMASH<\/strong><\/em> on CBS. Other of her notable roles include Keiko O\u2019Brien on some of the <em><strong>Star Trek<\/strong><\/em> films in the 1980s, and the role of Dr. Kim on <em><strong>The O.C.<\/strong><\/em> In 2020, she appeared in the live-action remake of <em><strong>Mulan<\/strong><\/em>, playing the title character\u2019s mother.
