After a brief and complicated stay with his cousin, the man starts facing poverty until one of the richest men in Pennsylvania, Harrison Lee Van Buren, hires him to build a prestigious Recreation Center honoring his deceased mother. After so much suffering L\u00e1szl\u00f3 and his wife <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Erzs\u00e9betcan, who joined him after being stuck in Europe for a few years, can finally live the \u201cAmerican Dream\u201d. But the ghosts from the past and a present which isn\u2019t as promising as it seemed, are going to haunt the couple and their hope of a better life\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?s=Adrien+Brody\"><strong>Adrien Brody<\/strong><\/a> is the heart and soul of The Brutalist, with a performance that is by far his best since The Pianist, which earned him an Academy Award as best leading actor. His capacity to add nuances to such complex psychology, being able to add drama or subtract when necessary, makes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">L\u00e1szl\u00f3 T\u00f3th a figure worth remembering, especially because &#8211; and this is probably the main issue of the movie &#8211; it is basically composed of two characters who don\u2019t connect too well with each other: the dark side of this man, haunted from the horror of the past and incapable of getting rid of his addiction, seems too often to be another man compared to the genius of architecture who fights everyone and everything in order to achieve his masterpiece.<\/span><\/p>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1774669342741533\" data-ad-slot=\"1211148813\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The screenplay written by Corbet together with <strong>Mona Fastvold<\/strong> tries in vain to make these sides of L\u00e1szl\u00f3 co-exist, with the effect of making <strong>The Brutalist<\/strong> way longer than necessary, more than three hours and a half. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif\">If it doesn\u2019t get boring it is just because of Brody, always capable of being compelling. This layered performance seems to be his own personal achievement because Brady Corbet doesn\u2019t get the same result from the rest of the cast, actually the other way around: <\/span><a style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif\" href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?s=Alessandro+Nivola\"><strong>Alessandro Nivola<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif\"> and <\/span><a style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif\" href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?s=Joe+Alwyn\"><strong>Joe Alwyn<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif\"> in their roles are quite effective, while <\/span><a style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif\" href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?s=Guy+Pearce\"><strong>Guy Pearce<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif\"> and especially <\/span><a style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif\" href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?s=Felicity+Jones\"><strong>Felicity Jones<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif\"> become pretty soon the weak link of the cast, developing their roles without any restrain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Corbet seems definitely more focused on the aesthetic of the Brutalist, which is in many scenes quite remarkable. The second part of the movie is visually stunning, thanks also to the cinematography by Laurie \u201cLol\u201d Crawley and her use of shadows and the absence of light. The director fills his saga with a few great moments of cinema, demonstrating that he studied pretty well the lessons of great authors like Paul Thomas Anderson, especially some stunning movies like <strong>There Will Be Blood<\/strong> and <strong>The Master<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26343\" src=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/The-Brutalist2.png\" alt=\"The Brutalist \" width=\"640\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/The-Brutalist2.png 640w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/The-Brutalist2-300x252.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>@Courtesy of A24<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the end of <strong>The Brutalist<\/strong>, even if admiring the work done by its creator in order to achieve such an elegant and complex movie, we left the press screening at the New York Film Festival uncertain if Brady Corbet\u2019s movie is about the journey of a Holocaust survivor who is constantly forced to deal with the pain of what he experienced, or it\u2019s a movie about the dark, violent, abusive side of the \u201cAmerican Dream\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This could actually mean that <strong>The Brutalist<\/strong> is both these stories, just not completely capable of making them just a cohesive one.
