The 79-year-old performer had suffered from multiple sclerosis for more than twenty years. In her later life, she became an advocate for those suffering from MS.<\/p>\r\n<p>A prolific actress, Garr appeared in dozens of television shows and films from the 1970s onward. She was especially known for her performances in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0084805\/\"><em><strong>Tootsie<\/strong><\/em>,<\/a> for which she garnered an Oscar nomination, and in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/find\/?q=young%20frankenstein&amp;ref_=nv_sr_sm\"><em><strong>Young Frankenstein<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. She also hosted <em><strong>Saturday Night Live<\/strong><\/em> three times and appeared often on <em><strong>The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson<\/strong><\/em> and on <em><strong>Late Night With David Letterman<\/strong><\/em>.<br \/><br \/>Teri Garr was born in Ohio in 1944 and spent a few years in Los Angeles before moving to New York City to study acting. She appeared as an extra in a few Elvis Presley movies and in the 1960s had a few bit parts on television sitcoms including <em><strong>That Girl<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Batman<\/strong><\/em>, and <em><strong>The Andy Griffith Show<\/strong><\/em>. Her later television roles included appearances on <em><strong>Friends<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>M*A*S*H<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>The Odd Couple<\/strong><\/em>, and <em><strong>The Bob Newhart Show<\/strong><\/em>. She was regularly seen as a singer\/dancer on <em><strong>The Sonny and Cher Show<\/strong><\/em> before landing a role in Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s <em><strong>The Conversation<\/strong><\/em>. Coppola later cast her in <em><strong>One From the Heart<\/strong><\/em>. She also worked under director Martin Scorsese in <em><strong>After Hours<\/strong><\/em> and under Robert Altman in <em><strong>The Player<\/strong><\/em>.<br \/><br \/>Her breakout role came when she played the flirtatious Inga in Mel Brooks\u2019s 1974 spoof film, <em><strong>Young Frankenstein<\/strong><\/em>, greeting Gene Wilder\u2019s Dr. Frederick Frankenstein by uttering the line, \u201cVould you like to have a roll in ze hay?\u201d<br \/><br \/>Garr captured an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role starring opposite Dustin Hoffman in Sydney Pollack\u2019s <em><strong>Tootsie<\/strong><\/em>. She also played a working mother in Michael Keaton\u2019s <em><strong>Mr. Mom<\/strong><\/em> and the wife of Richard Dreyfuss\u2019s character in Steven Spielberg\u2019s <em><strong>Close Encounters of the Third Kind<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\r\n<p><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1774669342741533\" data-ad-slot=\"1211148813\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\u00a0<br \/><br \/>As Garr told an interviewer in 2008, breaking the glass ceiling in the sexist entertainment industry was a challenge for her. She was told by the producers of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0074058\/\"><em><strong>The Sonny and Cher Show<\/strong><\/em><\/a> that she had the option of quitting if she was unhappy with her salary. \u201cThe whole world is sexist, starting with that show,&#8221; she complained. &#8220;That was an example of it: not getting paid what everybody else got paid for doing the same thing. So I started learning early that women are steamrolled.&#8221;<br \/><br \/>She added: \u201cIf there\u2019s ever a woman who\u2019s smart, funny, or witty, people are afraid of that, so they don\u2019t write that. They only write parts for women where they let everything be steamrolled over them, where they let people wipe their feet all over them. Those are the kind of parts I play, and the kind of parts that there are for me in this world.
