{"id":27684,"date":"2024-12-10T18:41:06","date_gmt":"2024-12-10T23:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=27684"},"modified":"2024-12-11T14:03:55","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T19:03:55","slug":"spike-lee-and-denzel-washington-will-collaborate-on-a-remake-of-akira-kuroswawas-film-high-and-low","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=27684","title":{"rendered":"Spike Lee and Denzel Washington Will Collaborate on a Remake of Akira Kurosawa&#8217;s Film, &#8216;High and Low&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>\u00a0\u00a9Courtesy of Toho\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000490\/\">Spike Lee<\/a>, who is currently heading the jury at the Red Sea International Film Festival, took time out to talk to reporters about his upcoming film, <em><strong>Highest to Lowest<\/strong><\/em>, which he described as a reinterpretation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000041\/\">Akira Kurosawa<\/a>\u2019s 1963 crime thriller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0057565\/\"><em><strong>High and Low<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. Kurosawa\u2019s film was about a Yokohama shoe-company executive who was victimized by extortionists when his chauffeur\u2019s son was kidnapped and held for ransom.<\/p>\r\n<p><em><strong>Highest to Lowest<\/strong><\/em> will debut in the summer of 2025. It\u2019s being released by A24, which is partnering on the project with Apple Original Films. The new production will mark Lee&#8217;s fifth collaboration with actor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000243\/\">Denzel Washington<\/a>, who will play the lead role of a mogul in the recording industry. Washington had earlier starred in four earlier \u201cjoints\u201d by the African American filmmaker: <em><strong>Mo\u2019 Better Blues<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Malcolm X<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>He Got Game<\/strong><\/em> and<em><strong> Inside Man<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Lee called their long-standing partnership \u201cthe dynamic Duo of D and Lee,\u201d adding that \u201cWe are brothers. \u2026 We just do our thing \u2026 We are familiar with each other. Also, our families are very tight.\u201d <br \/><br \/>The prolific director also noted that he\u2019d admired Kurosawa\u2019s work ever since first encountering it as a student. \u201cOne of the best things about film school is that you get introduced to world cinema, not just Hollywood,\u201d Lee was quoted as saying. Seeing Kurosawa\u2019s film <em><strong>Rashomon<\/strong> <\/em>and its structure inspired me to make <em><strong>She\u2019s Gotta Have It<\/strong><\/em>. In <em><strong>Rashomon<\/strong><\/em>, you have three people who witness a rape, and each gives their own opinion of what happened. In <em><strong>She\u2019s Gotta Have It<\/strong><\/em>, Nola Darling has three boyfriends who each see her in a different way. From the very beginning of my career, I was influenced by Kurosawa.\u201d <br \/><br \/>Spike Lee also indicated that neither he nor Washington had plans of retiring anytime soon. He reminded an audience at the Red Sea festival in Jeddah that Kurosawa had made his last film at the age of 81. \u201cYeah, I got some time left,\u201d said Lee, who turns 68 in March.
