The hidden relationship not only jeopardizes har power-position, but most importantly forces her to acknowledge her deepest and most private side.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set in the higher social level of New York, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt30057084\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_1_tt_7_nm_0_in_0_q_Babygirl\"><b>Babygirl<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is totally centered on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000173\/?ref_=tt_cst_t_1\"><b>Nicole Kidman<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who delivers a performance capable of exploring so many and surprising sides of Romy\u2019s character. Even if the structure of the story can resemble the erotic thriller, <\/span><b>Halina Reijn<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s screenplay is way more eager to develop the psychological aspect of her movie, focusing on a protagonist who clearly represents her point of view about exploring one\u2019s inner drives. <\/span><b>Nicole Kidman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> perfectly understood this and portrays Romy as a whole woman, strong and fragile, funny and extremely serious, shy and capable of bold actions. The actress\u2019 performance &#8211; which gained her the Coppa Volpi at the last Venice Film Festival &#8211; is the admirable testimony of her preparation for such a complex role. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scene after scene, even with Romy making silly mistakes or suffering the building stress of hiding her affair, Kidman gives the audience the feeling of having her character always under absolute control. <\/span><b>Halina Reijn<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lets the camera follow the leading actress with persistence, developing at the same time a cinematic universe which is refined as much as it\u2019s gritty. <strong>Babygirl<\/strong> is intriguing because it doesn&#8217;t offer any moral compass or socio-psychological pattern to embrace. There is no right or wrong in the characters\u2019 action, just the exploration of what Romy has started with her \u2018scandalous\u2019 behavior.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28150 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Babygirl1.png\" alt=\"Babygirl\" width=\"640\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Babygirl1.png 640w, https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Babygirl1-300x171.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>@Courtesy of A24<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accordingly, Samuel is just an enigmatic, charming tool for the woman to discover her sadistic impulses. The sense of uncertainty, fear and desire that Romy perceives going deeper and deeper in her affair with the young man is something that we haven\u2019t seen represented with such sincerity in a long time. It almost seems that <\/span><b>Halina Reijn<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is discovering Romy while shooting the movie, and this is in a strange way the main strength of the screenplay. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While at the beginning you don\u2019t really understand why she is doing what she is doing, little by little this woman becomes more emphatic, more intriguing in her flawed humanity, until as a viewer you end up rooting for her, for her right to express herself and her desires the way she prefers. This is surely the result of <\/span><b>Halina Reijn<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s vision, but even more is the achievement of <\/span><b>Nicole Kidman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s subtle but vibrant performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1774669342741533\" data-ad-slot=\"1211148813\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twenty-five years ago <\/span><b>Stanley Kubrick<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/reviews\/25-years-ago-i-got-my-eyes-wide-shut\/\"><b>Eyes Wide Shut<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gave <\/span><b>Nicole Kidman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the chance to portray another upper-class New York wife frustrated by\u00a0 unexpressed, unsatisfied sexual desires. There is a thin but intriguing connection between Alice Harford and Romy: watching <\/span><b>Babygirl<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you sometimes have the feeling that <\/span><b>Nicole Kidma<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n wants to re-analyze her old character through the new one, with more experience and knowledge of the world but in some way the same visceral fragility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We are not comparing <\/span><b>Stanley Kubrick<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s movie with <\/span><b>Hailna Reijn<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s work, it would be of course way too unfair. <\/span><b>Babygirl<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has its own specificity and works on a deep level even without <\/span><b>Eyes Wide Shut<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Nonetheless, watching the 1999 \u2018erotic thriller\u2019 by the director of<\/span><b> A Clockwork Orange<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>The Shining<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could add some thoughts to <\/span><b>Halina Reijn<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s movie. No matter what, the result will be the same: <\/span><b>Nicole Kidman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> delivered one of the best and most complex performances of her glorious career.
