The rumors had also indicated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm2581521\/\">Austin Butler<\/a> was to star as the leading character Patrick Bateman, a role played by <a href=\"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?s=Christian+Bale\">Christian Bale<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0366004\/\">Mary Harron<\/a>\u2019s 2000 film adaptation of Ellis&#8217;s novel.<br \/><br \/>The rumors about Guadagnino\u2019s purported remake were fueled by a 2024 announcement from Lionsgate that Scott Z. Burns would be writing an adaptation. <a href=\"https:\/\/movieweb.com\/american-psycho-remake-fake-news-author-bret-easton-ellis\/\"><em>Movieweb<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Archie Fenn, however thinks the whole thing was \u201cnothing but a studio cash grab.\u2019\u201d Fenn wrote that \u201cLionsgate had a very tough 2024, with many of their suspected planned tentpole movies flopping at the box office. Some suspect the <em><strong>American Psycho<\/strong><\/em> remake to be a way for the studio to easily recuperate some desperately needed cash.\u201d<br \/><br \/>In a recent podcast, Ellis said: \u201cI have a feeling it\u2019s fake news. I heard somewhere, from someone, that there are no contracts. Austin Butler hasn\u2019t signed anything to play Patrick Bateman. Luca doesn\u2019t have a deal. Scott Burns, who is supposed to write the screenplay, doesn\u2019t have a deal either.<\/p>\r\n<p><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1774669342741533\" data-ad-slot=\"1211148813\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\u00a0<br \/><br \/>\u201cFrom various sources that I have, this is just fake news that was put out there to see how an audience is going to react\u2026. If it does exist, I am not involved, I have nothing to do with this, I might get some money if they do this, but I am not involved creatively on any level, and that is all I know.\u201d<br \/><br \/>Renowned for its graphic violence, Ellis\u2019s novel focused on Bateman, an investment banker in Manhattan who led a secret life as a serial killer. The novelist has also written several film scripts, including <em><strong>Relapse<\/strong> <\/em>(which will mark his directorial debut), <em><strong>The Canyons<\/strong><\/em>, and <em><strong>Smiley Face Killers<\/strong><\/em>.
