It\u2019s been 25 years since director <\/span>Kevin Macdonald <\/b>won the Oscar for his 1999 documentary, <\/span>One Day in September<\/i><\/b>, and during those years, Macdonald has ably alternated between making docs like <\/span>Marley<\/i><\/b> and <\/span>Whitney<\/i><\/b>, and narrative films such as <\/span>The Last King of Scotland<\/i><\/b> and most recently, 2021\u2019s <\/span>The Mauritanian<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Macdonald\u2019s latest documentary, <\/span>One to One: John and Yoko<\/i><\/b>, is a fascinating time capsule looking at <\/span>John Lennon<\/b> and <\/span>Yoko Ono<\/b>\u2019s initial time in New York City in the early \u201870s, which led to Lennon\u2019s only full-length concert since leaving the Beatles. The \u201cOne to One\u201d concert took place at Madison Square Garden on August 30, 1972, and Macdonald\u2019s film, co-directed and edited by <\/span>Sam Rice-Edwards<\/b>, looks at everything going on in the country and directly with the couple in the months leading up to it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One to One <\/span><\/i>harks back to films like <\/span>Brett Morgen<\/b>\u2019s experimental David Bowie doc, <\/span>Moonage Daydream<\/i><\/b>, although it has a much stronger narrative throughline with so much amazing archival footage and recordings of both John and Yoko. The film is especially strong for the way it offers absolution for Yoko Ono, who was treated poorly by Beatles fans during their time together, and we hear how that created anxiety, especially once she came to the United States, specifically to search for her daughter Kyoko, who was taken away by her ex-husband. That\u2019s just one of the running throughlines that keeps <\/span>One to One<\/span><\/i> interesting, although most people will want to watch the movie to see Lennon\u2019s little-seen final MSG concert on the big screen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cinema Daily US<\/span><\/i> had a chance to speak with Macdonald about the decision to make the film and what was involved, as well as talking about why he regularly alternates between narrative features and docs. We also asked Macdonald if he had a chance to see the drama <\/span>September 5<\/i><\/b><\/a>, since filmmaker <\/span>Tim Fehlbaum<\/span><\/a> had stated that Macdonald\u2019s Oscar-winning 1999 documentary <\/span>One Day in September<\/span><\/i> inspired him to make that movie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One to One: John and Yoko<\/span><\/i> is currently playing in select IMAX theaters, and it will expand onto further non-IMAX screens starting Friday, April 18.<\/span><\/p>\n
