A24 and CMC Pictures are collaborating to bring an English-language version of Ne Zha 2<\/em><\/strong> to theaters across North America this summer, according to The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>. The entertainment companies are adapting the hit\u00a0Chinese animated\u00a0film for\u00a0American audiences into an English version. Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh will star in a lead voice role in the new adaptation.<\/p>\n

A24<\/a> will distribute the fantasy movie in the U.S. and Canada, as well as in Australia and New Zealand, on August 22. The sequel to Ne Zha<\/i><\/strong> will screen in IMAX, 3D and other premium large formats.<\/p>\n

The release marks a rare theatrical collaboration between A24, which is best known for distinctive auteur-driven movies like Past Lives<\/strong>,<\/em> and CMC Pictures. The latter is a Chinese state-backed company that dominates the global distribution of China’s most successful commercial cinema.<\/p>\n

Ne Zha 2<\/em><\/strong> is the world’s top-grossing animated film of all time. Beijing Enlight Pictures released the movie earlier this year during China’s Lunar New Year holiday. The follow-up went on to earn $2.2 billion. As a result, it surpassed\u00a0Inside Out 2<\/em><\/strong>‘s $1.7 billion gross, at the global box office. Ne Zha 2<\/em><\/strong> is also the fifth-highest-grossing film worldwide overall. The movie earned nearly all of its revenue from the Chinese mainland.<\/p>\n<\/ins>\n

The series’ second entry is the first non-English language movie to cross $2 billion. It broke box office records before being seen by a majority of audiences in the U.S. The film only received a small limited theatrical release in America on February 14. As a result, the majority of its revenue has come from China alone.<\/p>\n

Yang Yu (also known as Jiaozi) directed the follow-up. The feature’s predecessor is a modern reimagining of the mythological Chinese folk hero. The character is a cultural phenomenon and a milestone for Chinese animation. The follow-up builds on the hero’s legacy by blending high-concept storytelling and visuals.<\/p>\n

The franchise’s story follows the rebellious young titular demigod. Ne Zha was born to mortal parents but feared by the heavens, as he wrestles with immense powers. His destiny leads him to face an ancient force bent on humanity’s destruction.<\/p>\n<\/ins>\n

Since its release in China, Ne Zha 2<\/em><\/strong> has become the highest-rated animated film of the year on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie has also become one of 2025’s top-rated titles on Letterboxd.<\/p>\n

A24 and CMC’s partnership will test the U.S. market’s desire for Chinese storytelling. If Ne Zha 2<\/em><\/strong>‘s English-language distribution is successful, it offers the potential of crossover in animation across global cultures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

“I’m honored to be part of Ne Zha 2<\/em><\/strong>, a landmark in Chinese animation and a powerful reminder of how universal our stories can be,” Yeoh said in a statement. “Sharing this with audiences in English is such a joy, and I can’t wait for everyone to experience the wonder, heart, spectacular artistry and magic of this film on the big screen.”<\/p>\n
