Film<\/span>\u00a0at<\/span>\u00a0Lincoln<\/span>\u00a0Center<\/span>\u00a0announces the 63rd New York\u00a0Film<\/span>\u00a0Festival (NYFF63) Spotlight lineup. A complement to the NYFF63 Main Slate, Spotlight showcases a selection of 12 significant and anticipated features, including three world premieres, two U.S. premieres, and six New York premieres, as well as nine short\u00a0film<\/span>s shown in two programs. Presented by\u00a0Film<\/span>\u00a0at<\/span>\u00a0Lincoln<\/span>\u00a0Center<\/span>\u00a0in partnership with Rolex, NYFF63 takes place September 26 through October 13\u00a0at<\/span>\u00a0Lincoln<\/span>\u00a0Center<\/span>\u00a0and in venues across the city.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Spotlight selection presents five compelling feature-length portraits of iconic artists and entertainment figures. Acclaimed director Richard Linklater returns to NYFF for the sixth time with two inventive works: “Blue Moon<\/strong>“<\/i>, capturing a pivotal night in the life of lyricist Lorenz Hart as\u00a0Oklahoma!<\/i> opens on Broadway, and “Nouvelle Vague<\/strong>“<\/i>, a playful reimagining of the making of Jean-Luc Godard\u2019s “Breathless”<\/i><\/strong>. In “Mr. Scorsese<\/strong>“<\/i>,\u00a0film<\/span>maker Rebecca Miller (Maggie\u2019s Plan<\/i>, NYFF53) delivers a definitive five-part portrait of Martin Scorsese, told through his own words and new interviews with collaborators and family. Ben Stiller (“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty<\/strong>“<\/i>, NYFF51\u00a0Center<\/span>piece) explores his roots in “Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost<\/strong>“<\/i>, about the lives and legacy of his parents, comedy icons Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara. Rounding out the program is the Spotlight Gala selection “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere<\/strong>“<\/i>, Scott Cooper\u2019s moving biographical drama that captures the early-\u201980s period when Bruce Springsteen created the raw, acoustic songs that became his landmark album\u00a0Nebraska<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Two powerful documentaries in Spotlight utilizing everyday media and technologies reveal urgent global issues. “Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk<\/strong>“<\/i>, directed by Sepideh Farsi, unfolds through smartphone communications and offers a harrowing portrait of photojournalist Fatma Hassouna, who documented life under siege in Gaza. “The Perfect Neighbor<\/strong>“<\/i>, from Geeta Gandbhir, reconstructs a racially motivated crime in Florida using police body-cam footage and firsthand witness testimonies, creating an unflinching, intimate account of violence and justice in America.<\/p>\n<\/ins>\n

Additional Spotlight selections feature a vibrant mix of acclaimed international\u00a0film<\/span>s and emerging talent. Fresh from the Venice\u00a0Film<\/span> Festival is the Italian festival\u2019s opening night feature, “La Grazia<\/strong>“<\/i> by Paolo Sorrentino, and “Scarlet<\/strong>“<\/i>, a visually striking animated fantasy\u00a0film<\/span> by Mamoru Hosoda (“Belle<\/strong>“<\/i>, NYFF59). Following its debut\u00a0at<\/span>\u00a0the Cannes\u00a0Film<\/span> Festival is the dark comedy-mystery “A Private Life<\/strong>“<\/i>, directed by Rebecca Zlotowski and starring Jodie Foster, who delivers her first performance entirely in French. The section also showcases two impressive debuts: the world premiere of “Anemone<\/strong>“<\/i>\u00a0by Ronan Day-Lewis, featuring the acting return of Daniel Day-Lewis, and the New York premiere of\u00a0Pillion<\/i>\u00a0by Harry Lighton, which won Best Screenplay\u00a0at<\/span>\u00a0Cannes Un Certain Regard and received wide critical acclaim.<\/p>\n

Two programs of short\u00a0film<\/span>s will be featured. Spotlight Shorts includes new work by\u00a0film<\/span>makers previously featured in NYFF and New Directors\/New\u00a0Film<\/span>s: Radu Muntean\u2019s “Index<\/strong>“<\/i>, Gabriel Abrantes\u2019s “Arguments in Favor of Love<\/strong>“<\/i>, Abdellah Ta\u00efa\u2019s “Cairo Streets<\/strong>“<\/i>, and Alice Diop\u2019s “Fragments for Venus<\/strong>“<\/i>; and New York Shorts features\u00a0film<\/span>s by directors with ties to New York: Bingham Bryant\u2019s\u00a0Doomed and Famous<\/i>, Eve Liu\u2019s “Nervous Energy<\/strong>“<\/i>, Mary Rose McClain\u2019s “February Omen<\/strong>“<\/i>, Nathan Silver\u2019s “Carol & Joy<\/strong>“<\/i>, and David Cardoza\u2019s “Turtle Sandwich<\/strong>“<\/i>.<\/p>\n

NYFF63\u00a0film<\/span>s are screened\u00a0at<\/span>\u00a0Lincoln<\/span>\u00a0Center<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0at<\/span>\u00a0four venues across the city: Alamo Drafthouse Cinema (Staten Island), AMC Bay Plaza Cinema (Bronx), BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) (Brooklyn), and the Museum of the Moving Image (Queens).<\/p>\n

Rodgers had first paired up with Oscar Hammerstein II, and their musical\u00a0Oklahoma!<\/i>\u00a0had reinvigorated and all but reinvented narrative musical theater. Richard Linklater\u2019s (Hit Man<\/i>, NYFF61) luminous, erudite drama imagines a loquacious Hart (an astonishing tour de force by Ethan Hawke) on the night of\u00a0Oklahoma!<\/i>\u2019s premiere, holed up\u00a0at<\/span>\u00a0Sardi\u2019s and moving through various stages of grief and acceptance\u2014and blistering wit\u2014when faced with Broadway\u2019s new world order. Played with uncanny Proustian precision by the extraordinary Guillaume Marbeck, Godard desires to make his own mark as a\u00a0film<\/span>maker, envious of the big-screen success of his fellow\u00a0Cahiers du cin\u00e9ma<\/i>\u00a0critics Fran\u00e7ois Truffaut and Claude Chabrol. After Anne and Jerry passed away in 2015 and 2020, respectively, Stiller dug into the vast treasure trove of recordings, footage, letters, and other ephemera with which they documented their personal and professional lives.
