Filmmaker <\/span>Edward Berger<\/a> is\u00a0 trying to dispel rumors that he had agreed to direct \u00a0the forthcoming <\/span>Ocean\u2019s 14<\/strong> <\/em>film. Berger, the Oscar-winning director of <\/span>All Quiet on the Western Front<\/strong><\/em> and <\/span>Conclave<\/strong> <\/em>told<\/span> Deadline<\/em><\/a> that speculation about his role in the project had been exaggerated.<\/span><\/div>\n

As Berger elaborated:\u00a0 \u201cWe were talking at that time, Brad Pitt and I, and yes, was I seduced by the thought of doing something like that. I\u2019m from a small place in Germany. I\u2019ve never had those opportunities. And suddenly Brad Pitt and George Clooney and Julia Roberts and Matt Damon, I would be able to make a movie with them. … It\u2019s a franchise. I can pay my crew. I can have fun with them. It\u2019s a temptation.”<\/p>\n

“But Deep down inside, I knew it\u2019s not my movie, it\u2019s Steven Soderbergh\u2019s movie. He invented that, beautifully. He made them, and I\u2019m just following in his footsteps. What is new for me? I love those movies, but in essence, I don\u2019t know what to add to what the great Steven Soderbergh did.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/ins>\n

Steven Soderbergh, who had \u00a0been the creative genius behind the Ocean’s <\/strong><\/em>franchise from the beginning, withdrew his involvement after Ocean\u2019s 13 <\/strong><\/em>was released in 2007. Three key players have since died: actors Bernie Mack and Carl Reiner, and producer jerry Weintraub.<\/p>\n

Berger continued by saying he toyed with the idea but quickly rejected it: \u201cI went to bed, slept eight hours, and realized, it\u2019s not me. I called Brad [Pitt] because we had talked a bunch of times. I knew he was open to doing something, and I basically said, I\u2019m sorry, I don\u2019t want to do Ocean<\/strong><\/em>\u2019s<\/strong> and hope I haven\u2019t offended you. But I have this great script that I would love you to look at because I think it might be a challenge for both of us. He read it in two days and called back and said, I want to do it. It\u2019s the best script I\u2019ve ever read.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cgreat script\u201d that Berger was referring to is T<\/strong>he Riders<\/strong><\/em><\/a> for A24, which is set to shoot in 2026 with Brad Pitt in the starring role. Berger’s most recent project\u00a0 was Ballad of a Small Player<\/strong><\/em><\/a> with Colin Farrell in the starring role.<\/p>\n<\/ins>\n
