{"id":31346,"date":"2025-09-04T20:25:47","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T00:25:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=31346"},"modified":"2025-09-04T20:25:47","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T00:25:47","slug":"gus-van-sant-links-dead-mans-wire-to-luigi-mangiones-recent-slaying-of-health-care-executive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=31346","title":{"rendered":"Gus Van Sant Links &#8216;Dead Man&#8217;s Wire&#8217; to Luigi Mangione&#8217;s Recent Slaying of Health Care Executive"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a9Courtesy of Focus Features\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/interviews\/gus-van-sant-on-dead-mans-wire-interview-1235148536\/\"><em>IndieWire<\/em>,<\/a> filmmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001814\/\">Gus Van Sant<\/a> talked about the parallels between his new film, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt15181326\/\"><strong><em>Dead Man\u2019s Wire<\/em><\/strong>,<\/a> and the recent real-life case of Luigi Mangione, who had recently been charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York.<br \/><br \/><em><strong>Dead Man\u2019s Wire<\/strong><\/em> is a crime thriller set in the 1970s that focuses on the real-life abduction and killing of Richard Hall, an Indianapolis banker, by a disgruntled Tony Kiritsis. The film is based on a script by Austin Kolodney and includes cast members <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0803889\/\">Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd,<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm4223882\/\"> Dacre Montgomery<\/a>, Al Pacino, Colman Domingo, Myha\u2019la, and Cary Elwes. It had its premiere earlier this week at the Venice International Film Festival.<\/p>\r\n<p>Van Sant told his interviewers that he\u2019d been in Los Angeles in 1977 but was initially unaware of the Indianapolis shooting because he did not have a television at the time. \u201cIf there was this moment where they broadcast live, in L.A., then I missed it,\u201d he added. \u201cPossibly, their national quote-unquote broadcast was limited to the Midwest or the stations that were near Indianapolis, but I hadn\u2019t read about or heard about it, even.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1774669342741533\" data-ad-slot=\"1211148813\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<p>In his recent interview, Van Sant noted that Thompson\u2019s murder had taken place in December of 2024, just a few months after <em><strong>Dead Man\u2019s Wire<\/strong><\/em> had begun production. \u201cWe realized we were making something that had a similarity to it,\u201d the director was quoted as saying, referring to the fact that the slayers of both Montgomery and Thompson have been romanticized as folk heroes. \u201cWe realized we were making something that had a similarity to it,\u201d Van Sant declared. \u201cI was having this discussion with almost everyone my age of the acceptance of that particular Mangione incident and who the health company CEO was, and the person I was talking to had friends that knew [Thompson].\u201d<br \/><br \/>Discussing the romanticization of Thompson\u2019s murder, the director reflected on how vigilante actions have become \u201ckind of a new thing for today\u2019s generation.\u201d Van Sant added, \u201c[There are] extreme reactions to certain things, that I\u2019m not necessarily able to understand, in generations.\u201d<br \/><br \/>Van Sant earned Oscar nominations for Best Director for <strong>Good Will Hunting<\/strong> and <em><strong>Milk<\/strong><\/em>.
