{"id":31426,"date":"2025-09-10T23:15:36","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T03:15:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=31426"},"modified":"2025-09-14T00:34:27","modified_gmt":"2025-09-14T04:34:27","slug":"history-of-sound-oliver-hermanus-video-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinemadailyus.com\/?p=31426","title":{"rendered":"\u2018The History of Sound\u2019 Director Oliver Hermanus on Creating a Moving Period Piece (Video Interview)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South African-born filmmaker Oliver Hermanus has been making films for some time, but he first started getting larger international attention with his 2019 film, <\/span><b><i>Moffie<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which he followed by adapting Akira Kurosawa\u2019s 1952 film, <\/span><b><i>Ikiru<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, into 2022\u2019s <\/span><b><i>Living<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was nominated for two Oscars, including the first-ever Oscar nomination for actor Bill Nighy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hermanus\u2019 new film, <\/span><b><i>The History of Sound<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is just as powerful a drama, a period piece starring two of Britain\u2019s top male actors, Paul Mescal and Josh O\u2019Connor, as Lionel and David, two young men who meet in the early part of the 20th Century at school in New England and connect over a mutual passion for folk music. Years later, the two of them head on a journey across the American South collecting regional folk songs, as their romance blossoms until David is called off to serve in WWI. The movie is based on a short story by Ben Shattuck, who adapted his own work into the feature film for Hermanus to direct, the duo creating an expansive and emotional dramatic film that covers all of Lionel\u2019s life.
