All rights reserved.<\/p>\r\n<p>After an acting career spanning nearly half a century, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000129\/\">Tom Cruise<\/a> has finally won an honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement.<\/p>\r\n<p>The statuette was presented to him on Sunday during the Governor\u2019s Awards ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Making the presentation was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0327944\/\">Alejandro G. I\u00f1\u00e1rritu<\/a>, who\u00a0 has directed an upcoming film, yet unnamed, in which Cruise will star.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cTom Cruise doesn\u2019t just make movies,\u201d I\u00f1\u00e1rritu declared in his introductory remarks. \u201cHe is movies.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>The 63-year-old Cruise had been previously nominated for his roles in<em><strong> Born on the Fourth of July<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Jerry Maguire<\/strong><\/em>, and <em><strong>Magnolia<\/strong><\/em>. He also received a Best Picture nomination for <em><strong>Top Gun: Maverick<\/strong><\/em>, which he produced.<\/p>\r\n<p>In accepting the honorary Oscar, Cruise delivered an emotional speech in which he paid tribute to the film industry and those who work in it.<\/p>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1774669342741533\" data-ad-slot=\"1211148813\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<p>\u201cThe cinema, it takes me around the world,\u201d he said. \u201cIt helps me to appreciate and respect differences. It shows me also our shared humanity, how alike we are in so, so many ways.\u201d Cruise added. \u201cAnd no matter where we come from, in that theater, we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together, and that is the power of this art form. And that is why it that matters, that is why it matters to me. So making films is not what I do, it is who I am. I want you to know that I will always do everything I can for this art form, to support and champion new voices, to protect what makes cinema powerful.\u201d\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>Other honorary Oscars went to choreographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000739\/\">Debbie Allen<\/a> and production designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0859661\/\">Wynn Thomas<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0Allen was honored for her work on <em><strong>Amistad<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Fame<\/strong><\/em>, and <em><strong>Jo Jo Dancer<\/strong><\/em> as well as for choreographing 17 Oscar awards ceremonies. Recalling his childhood in inner-city Philadelphia, Thomas paid tribute to his mother and grandmother for instilling in him \u201ca sense of fearlessness\u00a0 and determination that has never left me, that has helped me navigate the barriers and complexities of show business.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award was presented to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000573\/\">Dolly Parton<\/a> for her work on eradicating poverty and improving children\u2019s literacy.
