The novel on which <em><strong>The Hunger Games<\/strong><\/em> is based was written by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1056741\/\">Suzanne Collins<\/a> while the <em><strong>Battle Royale<\/strong><\/em> film is an adaptation of a novel by Japanese author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0847295\/\">Koushun Takami<\/a>.<br \/><br \/>Tarantino, the 62-year-old two-time Oscar winner lashed out during his appearance on The Bret Easton Ellis podcast this week.<br \/><br \/>\u201cI do not understand how the Japanese writer didn\u2019t sue Suzanne Collins for every fucking thing she owns,\u201d thundered Tarantino. \u201cThey just ripped off the fuckin\u2019 book. Stupid book critics are not going to go watch a Japanese movie called <em><strong>Battle Royale<\/strong> <\/em>so the stupid book critics never called her on it.\u201d<br \/><br \/>Tarantino continued his diatribe by declaring, \u201cThey talked about how it was the most original fuckin\u2019 thing they\u2019d ever read. As soon as the film critics saw the film, they said, \u2018What the fuck? This is just <em><strong>Battle Royale<\/strong><\/em> except PG!&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1774669342741533\" data-ad-slot=\"1211148813\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Takami&#8217;s novel follows a group of disaffected teenagers who have been forced by a totalitarian regime in Japan to fight until just one survives. Its\u00a0 plot is mirrored in Collins&#8217;s novel, which is set in the fictional nation of Panem, in North America.<br \/><br \/>Collins told an interviewer for <em>The New York Times<\/em> in 2011 that she\u2019d never heard of <em><strong>Battle Royale<\/strong><\/em> until after she submitted her manuscript to her publisher, only to be directed to \u201cjust continue with what you\u2019re doing.\u201d\u00a0<br \/><br \/>The <em><strong>Battle Royale<\/strong><\/em> movie was released in 2000, followed by a 2003 sequel entitled <em><strong>Battle Royale II: Requiem.<\/strong><\/em> Five films have since been released in <em><strong>The Hunger Games<\/strong><\/em> franchise, which debuted in 2012. A sixth one,<em><strong> Sunrise on the Reaping<\/strong><\/em>, is set to be released on November 20, 2026.
