His death was announced by fellow filmmaker Bence Fliegauf on behalf of Tarr\u2019s family.<br \/><br \/>The art-film director was especially celebrated for his contributions to the contemporary \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/list\/ls505720348\/\">slow-film<\/a>\u201d movement. He was best known for his 1994 feature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0111341\/\"><em><strong>S\u00e1t\u00e1ntang\u00f3<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, a 450-minute adaptation of the novel by L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Krasznahorkai.<\/p>\r\n<p>Tarr was born in P\u00e9cs, Hungary in 1955 and studied at Bal\u00e1zs B\u00e9la St\u00fadi\u00f3, where he directed his debut film, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0077383\/\"><em><strong>Family Nest<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, in 1977. After it won the Grand Prix at the Mannheim Film Festival, he enrolled in the Academy of Theatre and Film in Budapest. Upon graduation, he established the T\u00e1rsul\u00e1s Filmst\u00fadi\u00f3.<\/p>\r\n<p>Tarr first came to international prominence with the release of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0095475\/\"><em><strong>Damnation<\/strong> <\/em><\/a>in 1988, which had its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival and won him a prize for Best Young Filmmaker at the European Film Awards.<\/p>\r\n<p><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1774669342741533\" data-ad-slot=\"1211148813\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Tarr\u2019s cinematic approach influenced filmmakers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000464\/\">Jim Jarmusch<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001814\/\">Gus Van Sant<\/a>, who emulated his style of using long shots to convey a sense of existential angst as experienced by marginalized characters\u2014a slow, immersive approach that downplayed a traditional focus on plot and narration.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>After he completed his ninth and final feature, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1316540\/\"><em><strong>The Turin Horse<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, in 2011, he turned his energies to teaching, telling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/bela-tarr-dead-hungarian-film-director-slow-cinema-70-1236465456\/\"><em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>, \u201cI don\u2019t want to be a stupid filmmaker who is just repeating himself and doing the same shit just to bore the people.\u201d<br \/><br \/>Tarr served as a visiting professor at Filmakademie BW in Ludwigsburg, Germany; at Le Fresnoy \u2013 Studio national des arts contemporains in Lille, France; and at FreeSzfe Budapest.<br \/><br \/>As a self-anointed \u201cleftist anarchist\u201d Tarr was a vehement critic of right-wing figures like Donald Trump, Viktor Orb\u00e1n, and Marine Le Pen.
