This year, the European Film Awards (EFA) switched its December date to January to more closely align with an increasingly global awards season. Although these winners won’t affect the Oscar nominations, Academy voting ended on January 16, and the January 17 awards ceremony could have an effect on Oscar voters in selecting their winners in March.<\/p>\n

The European equivalent to the Oscars presented awards in Berlin on Saturday, with many of the nominees and winners aligning with what is expected to be 2026 Oscar nominees: “Bugonia<\/strong>“, “Sentimental Value<\/strong>“, “It Was Just an Accident” are among them.<\/p>\n

\u201cSentimental Value<\/strong>\u201d triumphed with awards for best film, director Joachim Trier, actors Renate Reinsve and Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd, and screenwriters Trier and Eskil Vogt. The Neon title should expect to receive a Best Picture Academy Award nomination as well as nods for those actors.<\/p>\n

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has almost twice the number of voters as the European Film Academy, but there is overlap between the voting groups that could help determine which awards will be presented.<\/p>\n

Oliver Laxe won five European Film Awards for “Sirat’<\/strong>“, which is the Spanish language rescue odyssey set in the desert of Morocco and is the country’s entry for the Academy Awards.<\/p>\n

It also received\u00a0five nods on the Oscars shortlist\u00a0across international feature and below-the-line categories. Laxe\u2019s film is looking strong up against other fellow Neon-released movies: \u201cSentimental Value<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cNo Other Choice<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cThe Secret Agent<\/strong>,\u201d and \u201cIt Was Just an Accident<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/ins>\n
