While speaking to MovieWeb<\/a> to help support the release of his latest genre movie, Raimi discussed whether he has been develop any plans to revive Darkman<\/em><\/strong>. He confirmed that the potential sequel has a screenplay in place and “two great directors” attached.<\/p>\n “Yes, Ghost House Pictures, the company I work with, is trying to make the sequel right now. We’ve got a screenplay and two great directors, but we’re still having a little difficulty with the financing. It’s always the same in the movie business,” the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness<\/i><\/strong> helmer shared.<\/p>\n Since he’s such a Darkman<\/em><\/strong> fan, Heart Eyes<\/em><\/strong> director Josh Ruben is also under consideration to helm the franchise’s upcoming installment. He recorded a fan commentary for a Scream Factory 4K and Blu-ray release.<\/p>\n<\/ins>\n Ruben has also shared his pitch for a sequel<\/a> on social media. His “approach to telling a new Darkman<\/em><\/strong> sequel would be very different than I ever would have expected, drawing inspiration from the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and the recent update of\u00a0The Invisible Man<\/em><\/strong>,” the filmmaker noted.<\/p>\n Universal Pictures\u00a0released\u00a0Darkman<\/em><\/strong> in 1990. The drama stars Liam Neeson as Dr. Peyton Westlake, who adopts the persona of the titular character after gangster Robert Durant brutally beats him and leaves him for dead.<\/p>\n The protagonist ends up receiving an experimental treatment that leaves him with superhuman abilities. However, he’s left mentally scarred and is sent on a revenge mission to hunt down the people who disfigured him.<\/p>\n Darkman<\/strong><\/em> was Raimi’s homage to Universal horror movies and his attempt to create an original superhero. However, the studio blocked him from gaining the rights to the character.<\/p>\n The film was well received by critics, who praised Raimi’s gruesome story and Gothic visuals. Audiences were’t quite as impressed with the movie, however. But the drama still became a box office success as it garnered $48.8 million at the worldwide box office against a $14 million budget.<\/p>\n Darkman<\/strong><\/em> spawned two television movies, but neither were well received. Those television films were 1995’s Darkman II: The Return of Durant<\/em><\/strong> and 1996’s Darkman III: Die Darkman Die<\/em><\/strong>. However, Raimi didn’t take part in either of the follow-up movies.<\/p>\n In recent years, Raimi has worked as a producer on a variety of films, including Boy Kills World<\/strong><\/em> and Locked<\/em><\/strong>. He’s also known for writing and directing the Evil Dead<\/em><\/strong> films, including this year’s Evil Dead Burn<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n Raimi also directed and produced Send Help<\/em><\/strong>, which stars Rachel McAdams as an employee who ends up stranded with her boss on an island after their private jet crashes there. What ensues is a bloody battle for survival as they must survive each other amid rising tension. 20th Century Studios will distribute the thriller this Friday, January 30.<\/p>\n The drama is Raimi’s first movie as the helmer since his return to superhero movies with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness<\/em><\/strong>. While the filmmaker has suggested that he is in no rush to return to another superhero outing, he would love to finally get to make his version of The Shadow<\/em><\/strong>, if he can ever acquire the rights.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Besides Neeson, Darkman<\/em><\/strong> also stars Frances McDormand, Colin Friels and Larry Drake.
