Best known in the West as the mythic katana-wielding Lady Snowblood of the eponymous 1973 Toho picture\u2014a violent cult work steeped in fountains of spurting blood\u2014actress and singer Meiko Kaji remains inseparable from the image of a rebellious outlaw heroine, a cataclysmic force of seventies Japanese cinema whose characteristic steely-eyed gaze cemented her as something akin to Clint Eastwood\u2019s Man with No Name.<\/p>\n<p>Recruited at the coda of Japan\u2019s studio era, Meiko Kaji debuted in 1965 under her real name Masako Ota as a contract player for Nikkatsu, Japan\u2019s oldest studio. Deemed \u201cdifficult\u201d for not fitting into the studio\u2019s prescribed mold of modest, pure-hearted female ing\u00e9nues (in the vein of Nikkatsu star\u00a0<strong>Ruriko Asaoka<\/strong>), Kaji was soon sidelined to supporting roles until her outspoken nature proved well-suited for outsider roles, embodying the image of an outlaw figure as she moved into genre cinema with noteworthy delinquent series\u00a0<em>Stray Cat Rock,\u00a0<\/em>an early launching pad as well for co-star\u00a0<strong>Tatsuya Fuji\u00a0<\/strong>(<em><strong>In the Realm of the Senses<\/strong><\/em>) and Kaji\u2019s mentor\u00a0<strong>Yasuharu Hasebe<\/strong>. As Nikkatsu opted to shift away from mainstream film and into softcore productions to combat declining attendance, Kaji\u2014who had assumed the stage name \u201cMeiko Kaji\u201d under the suggestion of\u00a0<em>chambara<\/em>\u00a0director\u00a0<strong>Masahiro Makino\u00a0<\/strong>(<em>Singing Lovebirds<\/em>)\u2014left the studio of her own accord at the age of 23.<\/p>\n<p>Soon sought by Toei as an ideal successor to retiring\u00a0<em>ninkyo eiga\u00a0<\/em>(chivalry film)\u00a0<strong>Junko Fuji,\u00a0<\/strong>Kaji would then rise to recognition as the vengeful prisoner\u00a0<em>Sasori\u00a0<\/em>(Scorpion) in the popular\u00a0<em>Female Prisoner Scorpion\u00a0<\/em>series (1972-1973) and then, during a hiatus, took on the role of Yuki in\u00a0<strong>Toshiya Fujita<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0<em><strong>Lady Snowblood<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(1973). Kaji willfully defied being pigeonholed by her successes\u2014seeking instead to further her craft and artistry with filmmakers such as\u00a0<strong>Kinji Fukasaku<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Yasuzo Masumura<\/strong>, eventually going freelance by her mid-twenties. Moving from\u00a0<em>ninkyo eiga<\/em>\u00a0and pinky violence to yakuza pictures, arthouse productions and television, Kaji\u2014whose piercing gaze came to define an era of Japanese cinema\u2014transcended the confines of genre cinema; her depth and versatility extend far beyond the cult mythos that surrounds her.<\/p>\n<p>Over 60 years since her film debut, Japan Society will host Kaji for her first public appearance in New York City in more than 40 years. With Meiko Kaji, Hoki Tokuda, Makoto Sako.<\/em><br \/>\nAlthough she began her acting career at Nikkatsu under her real name, Masako Ota became Meiko Kaji on the advice of her mentor Masahiro Makino, and this phantasmagoric female swordplay saga\u2014the best period film Kaji made at Nikkatsu\u2014was her first starring role under her new, tougher name. The third and final entry in the\u00a0<em>Rising Dragon<\/em>\u00a0series of female gambler films that starred Hiroko Ogi,\u00a0<em>Blind Woman\u2019s Curse<\/em>\u00a0dispenses not only with the original character but also Ogi herself, instead casting Kaji as the benevolent, tattooed leader of a band of yakuza. Confined within a women\u2019s prison populated by sadistic, leering guards and volatile inmates, Meiko Kaji\u2019s Nami radiates a simmering, unspoken rage in what would become her defining role at Toei\u2014spawning three sequels over the next year. Ito fixes his gaze on the unrepentant viciousness of society, its structural oppressions refracted through the cellblock\u2019s own microcosm. The third film in the series, and last by original director Shunya Ito,\u00a0<em>Beast Stable<\/em>\u00a0is the most horror-tinged entry, and arguably the most violent. An essential link within Fukasaku\u2019s cinematic world,\u00a0<em>The Boss\u2019s Head<\/em>\u00a0found him expanding his action vocabulary to include car stunts, as well as creating not one, but two strong female roles (the other played by Yuriko Hishimi). Kaji\u2019s wildly expressive passion, anguish and love\u2014expressed with such conviction\u2014marks a fascinating collaboration with Daiei master Masumura, one worthy of being the actress\u2019s favorite role.
