Koji Suzuki, the author known for horror novels such as \u201cThe Ring\u201d and \u201cSpiral\u201d, passed away on the 8th at a hospital in Tokyo. He was 68.<\/p>\n

Born in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. He made his debut in 1990 with “Paradise\u201d, which won the Excellence Award at the Japan Fantasy Novel Awards. His 1991 novel \u201cRingu\u201d was adapted into a film that became a massive hit, helping to spark the \u201cJ-Horror boom.\u201d His 1995 novel \u201cSpiral\u201d won the Eiji Yoshikawa Literary Newcomer Award, and his 2008 novel \u201cEdge\u201d received the Shirley Jackson Award in the United States.<\/p>\n

The film \u201cThe Ring<\/strong>\u201d (directed by Hideo Nakata<\/a>), featuring the iconic character \u201dSadako,\u201d starred Nanako Matsushima, Hiroyuki Sanada<\/a>, and Miki Nakatani<\/a>, while \u201dSpiral<\/strong>\u201d (directed by Joji Iida) featured Koichi Sato, Nakatani, and Sanada, sparking a Japanese horror boom. In particular, the scene in which Sadako\u2014with her long black hair and dressed in white\u2014leaps out of the television screen left a lasting impression.<\/p>\n

In 2002, \u201cThe Ring<\/strong>\u201d remade in U.S, directed by Gore Verbinski, written by Ehren Kruger, and starring Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, David Dorfman, and Brian Cox. The success of The Ring inspired American remakes of several other Asian and Japanese horror films, including The Grudge (2004) and Dark Water (2005).<\/p>\n

In the United States, Koji Suzuki was introduced as \u201cJapan’s Stephen King.\u201d) \u201cDark Water\u201d(Honogurai mizu no soko kara) <\/i>was also adapted into a film and remade in the United States as \u201cDark Water<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

His hobby is working out. As a stay-at-home dad, he raises his children, and many of his essays focus on parenting.\u00a0 <\/span>He connects the macho image of fatherhood often seen in American movies to the male ideal of being a \u201cstrong father who protects his family,\u201d arguing that \u201cif you take machismo to its logical conclusion, you inevitably arrive at feminism.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/ins>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
